I don't think either of them lives in my neck of the woods.

1. Just different names for the Marmota Monax, a large burrowing rodent...
Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog

They get very fat and lazy around here (South Eastern PA) and are quite common. They dig very complex burrows with several levels and rooms and many escape routes. They also hibernate, and will emerge in late May or early April.

12. It's my favorite commercial - and I don't really like commercials,
but that one has me laughing my ass off for some reason.

8. They're known as woodchucks here in MN.
And they are mean. They're meaner than any animals around here. But I still like them.

14. A mama Groundchunk made her home under our porch
two years ago. Raised her 5-6 babies there. We'd see them exploring the front yard together. Adorable little furry baked potatoes. And then they'd run (well, waddle quickly) back under the porch. And as to the whistling pig thing....boy, can they whistle! I was walking around on the porch one day and Mama G. got nervous and gave a warning whistle to her babies...Never heard anything like it....As loud and piercing as a human through-the-teeth whistle, but more musical.
I have to admit I really like groundhogs. They remind me of Mz. Groundhog and her Baby Grundoon in the old Pogo strips.

16. Yes, same thing just regional.
Something I read once, In the Civil War if a person was suspected as a Yankee spy they would point out the animal to the suspect and wait for the comment , a woodchuck would get you doomed.

My garden is attacked by the creatures every year. I try and live trap to release over to the snooty country club.

My cousin in Breckenridge Co KY kept one as a pet. It was cute as heck. It was raised with the dogs and met its end chasing a farm truck. I am not making this up.

great commercial
