JAWS should have beaten CUCKOO'S NEST for Best Picture
Don't get me wrong, I love One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But really, think about it...

Milos Forman already had great source material to work with. All he had to do was not deviate too strongly, cast his actors well, and shoot.

Steven Spielberg, on the other hand, was tasked with adapting a mediocre potboiler by Peter Benchley and overcoming nightmare-inducing technical problems. Against all odds, he made one of the greatest movies of all time.

JAWS deserved the Oscar.

1. Pulp Fiction should have beaten Forrest Gump
2001: A Space Odyssey (not even nominated) should have beaten Oliver. :wtf:

Maltese Falcon should have beaten How Green Was My Valley.

And I agree re: Jaws.

Or Shawshank Redemption. 1994 was such a good year and stupid Forrest Gump wins. Epic Fail.

2. Disagree strongly. "Cuckoo's Nest" is in my Top 10 EVER made... ""Jaws" not in the Top 100.
.
.
.
And I am so evenly divided on "Forrest Gump" and "Pulp Fiction" that I might've had to flip a coin.

5. Barry Lyndon should have beaten all of them.
A great film with great cinematography, John Alcott, made by a great director, Stanley Kubrick.

There are more people in that still pic you posted than have actually seen the film.

11. Probably in the US, but it was a big hit overseas.
SK mentioned that in an interview one time. Still a feast for the eyes.

10. Jaws was a mess - no script and logistics foul up
Dreyfuss was on Letterman telling a funny story about how everyone in Martha's Vineyard had their radios tuned to the filming frequency. "The shark is working but the boat is sinking" "the boat is up but the shark is broken". Spielberg filmed the Ben Gardner scene in his swimming pool months later.

Cuckoos Nest was KIRK Douglas's baby for years. He played it McMurphy on stage and tried to get it made for 15 or so years. Michael finally got it made and Kirk was heartbroken that he didn't get the role.

15. I think it was serendipity
It's a good thing that they had so many problems with the mechanical shark. It forced Spielberg to rely on suspense and allusion rather than shock and gore.
