3. I have three of those little yappy dogs.
A Chihuahua, a Mini Pin and a French bulldog. All day, I am screaming "Shut up! Shut up!" The next-door neighbor has a small dog that yaps whenever it is outside and then my dogs chime in.

4. I always had large dogs
and now I have two little ones, one yappy and one quiet. The draw for me is cuddling and how smart they are. I wouldn't have a big dog again. By the way I have been pretty successful at curbing the yappy dog's penchant for barking by letting her get a few barks in and then correcting her. As she has been with us longer she is picking up the quiet one's habits and calming down. I find they take less money to keep also. My 129lb lab mix had to have more of everything, medicine, food etc. These little girls split a cup of good food a day. They are cheaper.

5. I house sat for an apricot poodle one time. I went there to meet the pup and things
went well. I then came in for the first day and that little poodle was terrified...shaking and shaking. I spent an hour flat on the floor trying to make friends and calm the poor thing down.

6. I have to admit that I've always been fond of medium-to-large dogs...
.
.
.
...and, until the last few years, had found small dogs to ALL fit the
stereotype of incessantly loud, irritating and aggressive. However,
recently I HAVE met a few that broke that mold for me.

17. Daisey Lou! I love her name! Growing up, we had a neighbor who had an English Bulldog &
he had the cutest personality. Two of his bottom teeth stuck out when his mouth was closed. He loved hanging out with the kids.

Here's my Boston Terrier, who keeps us entertained:

12. Canine alarm system
Small, yappy dogs make great watchdogs who'll alert you to anything that shouldn't be there. They're too small to do the dirty work themselves, unlike guard dogs, but they make great alarm systems you don't have to have installed by a professional.

The only drawbacks: 1) they must be trained; 2) they require regular feeding, walking, watering, and waste cleanup.

14. I just rescued a 4.5 pound Chihuahua from the shelter. I have only ever had large dogs.
He's a trip!

He was starved and beaten and half-dead with pnuemonia. Mostly all he did was nap in my cozy desk drawer for the first few weeks, as the medications and good nutrition revived him.

Once he got stronger..,..whoa! The barking and stamina!

He's at a trainer now. Learning to be a good canine citizen. Can't wait to get him back home!

:loveya:

I have a Chihuahua that's about half again that size. She black and tan and looks like she's wearing a Batman mask.

She's not nearly as quiet as your guy, but she's not really yappy either.

Unless the upstairs neighbors are standing in the hall outside our door being loud. Then she barks! She does not like them. Smart dog.

21. Hey Thom!
I thought you were a cat person! I didn't know you had a dog. Pru barks when someone comes to the door and gets him going, but other than that, which is what you want out of a dog, they are fairly quiet. Until the neighborhood stray cats get to wailing out in the yard, as has been happening lately.
Long time no see. Hope you are well!!

Hey watch it! Who are you! Don't you DARE sit by my lady! on, and on, and on. She's a darling Shih Tsu with personality and the alpha female bitch-Queen of my house. Need a newer picture cause she's down to one eye with a pirate look.

25. i have had both - a large dog and some little ones
The big dog was great. Lovable, loyal, and wanted nothing more than to please. The downside was the lovable part, sometimes. He had to be the center of everything going on, and didn't realize he wasn't a little dog. That could be problematic when guests were over, as part of the planning always involved how to deal with the dog. He passed on in the early 90s, and I will always miss him. All in all, he was a great companion.

In the years since, I've had several Bichons. Three as full time pets, and several fostered/rescue ones. The smaller guys are every bit as loving and loyal, and brimming with personality. I have to say they are a bit easier to live with. They are much easier to clean up after, and seem to blend in with the household and people coming and going. When a guest or guests arrive, they need a few minutes to meet and greet and get their share of attention. After that, they are exactly like everyone else there. They occasionally contribute to the interaction, but otherwise are quiet but present. They seem to know just how much anybody wants of them. Some friends have them in their laps constantly, while others prefer a few minutes of greeting and then be left alone. The dogs are great either way.

Being frequent travelers also make the little guys good choices. On short trips, it's easy to bring them along. For longer journeys, it's SO easy to have someone care for them. They love being at our dog sitter's house as much as being at home. In fact, just mentioning her name gets them all excited.

In short, they are less overbearing, and MUCH more portable. Sort of like having an iPad instead of a desktop computer.

When I was younger and dumber, I thought it wasn't "manly" to have a little dog. How glad I am that I learned otherwise!

26. Little dogs take up less space on the bed.
Other than that, I don't see a connection with either big or little dogs and the amount they bark. Right now the big Shepherd cross I have barks more than the Jack Russell.

One thing though, the little ones don't take up nearly as much space in bed. The JRT sleeps on the pillow above my head and I never know she's even there all night. My big galoot however likes to make sure my husband and I know exactly how much space she needs to sleep with us, and that's most of a queen size mattress. It's quite a shoving match some nights when I wake up on my 6 inch sliver of the bed about to fall off my side, and my husband's trying to balance on his 6 inch sliver on his side and our big girl is sprawled happily between us with a full 5 feet of space around her.

Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 12:33 PM by hedgehog
So we have a dog that likes to bark at things like a beagle, with the deep chest and volume of a shepherd!

He and his buddy the mittelspitz have been on the porch the last hour barking at the bad squirrel on the bird feeders.

32. I think mine's crossed with a boxer.
She's got classic boxer markings but I know her mom was a shepherd since they found the mom and the pups in a drainage pipe in the forest preserve. When I went to the shelter, the pups were still with mom so I know one half for sure.

She's a big girl - about 65 lbs of pure (bed hogging) love whatever breeds she is....

28. You can pick up a wienie and remove him when he's being bad
Not so easy with a German Shepherd or other large dog.

Also, as mentioned, weinies hog less of the bed (or sofa).

And they eat less, and consequently, poop less.

And you can make Halloween costumes for them out of a hat purchased for $2 at the thrift store. Here's out little Hallow-weinie.
