Just an FYI - do NOT leave a 10lb butternut squash in the fridge for 6 months |
|
:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
I was at my friend's beach house last weekend. We were part of a group planting beach grass at our local beaches here in Delaware. She almost had it closed for the winter in October but a last minute request she left them use it for the weekend. Only thing she would have to do afterwards is turn off the water and she had a local plumber take care of that.
So this was the first weekend we were at the beach house. I opened the fridge to put some beverages in there and there it was - a cross between an alien baby and a two week old placenta
:scared: :scared:
I guess the last people there bought this giant butternut squash and then didnt' use it. Instead of taking it with them or tossing it they left it in the fridge - even though they were told they would be the last people in there until next spring.
:scared: :scared:
Seriously - does anyone think a large pulpy vegetable will keep for 6 months in the fridge.
:puke: :puke: :puke:

1. Every so often I find a "mystery container" |
|
that got pushed to the back of a fridge shelf and forgotten for, um, an extended period of time. Inevitably there is something long past identification and a smell, make that STENCH coming off of it that makes mustard gas come to mind.
But a ten-POUND squash? Egads, what a hellacious and stinky mess that must have been.

4. I never have that problem with winter squashes. |
|
They get eaten long before then, mostly because I LOVE winter squash soup. Even if I don't get to it right away, I have to endure the dirty looks of my geezer cat, who adores the stuff.

5. I used to have this incredible recipe for Pumpkin-Apple Soup... |
|
. . . ...that was often "requested" ("DO IT!!!!!") when I'd give dinner parties. . . . Once, having served the soup and gone back to the kitchen to continue working on the rest of the meal, I heard a LOT of whispering and giggling and one REALLY loud burst of prolonged laughter. I peeked out and saw hardly any of the soup had been eaten. . I tasted MY portion. I never did figure it out, but I had done SOMETHING terribly, terribly wrong somewhere in the last step or two and it was HORRIBLE!!!! . . . I found out later that the prolonged burst of laughter came when someone tried to pawn theirs off on Brandy, this big ol' goofy sweetheart of a yellow Lab who, mind you... loved to roll around in moist, smelly, putrid things for fun. . She had turned up her nose QUICKLY and walked away from the, ahem... treat. . . .:rofl::rofl: . . . (S-EWWWW-P) . . .

|
Me: I'm gonna the grocery. Anything else we need? How about eggs? Other: There are already eggs in the fridge Me: Might be old. Are we sure they're still good? Other: Eggs keep
<off to grocery and back. clock hands spin. time to make dinner>
Other: These eggs are kinda strangely light
<cracks egg>
Other: Whoa! Never seen this before
<shows me cracked egg: yolk and white have completely dried into flakey film on inside of shell>
Me: I'm gonna the grocery. Anything we need besides eggs?

9. We just tossed the two pumpkins on our front porch last weekend. |

Instead of carving them, our daughter painted them ala Jack Skellington and they lasted from the middle of October.
In the Florida sun. On our front porch.
