I feel horrible for my daughter. She just got a letter in the mail telling her she was not chosen for National Junior Honor Society. I know in the grand scheme of things this really isn't a big deal, but she has worked so hard and wanted to become a member so bad. She's heart broken.
The thing that really gets me is that she met all of the qualifications: Scholarship, Leadership, Character and tons of community service. She plays sports and is an all state orchestra member. She was given no reason and no avenue for appeal. The letter states the committees decision was final, there is no appeals process, we do not get to see any comments from the committee, and can not even find out who is on the committee.
Aren't students allowed due process in such a thing? Were she a bully or in trouble she would have her rights spelled out for her, given a fair hearing and allowed to appeal any decision. But because she is intelligent, spends her time volunteering, etc. she gives up all her legal rights? This doesn't seem right to me.
I have the horrible feeling that this has to do with me, as I have had a couple of run ins with her two Neanderthal backward thinking teachers, just the two that I think would volunteer to be on a committee to judge others. Yet like I said, they won't even tell me who's on the committee!
Most of her teachers are fantastic. I don't often post but I was wondering if anyone knows anything I can do.

revenge can be sweet and encourage to go on to do even better things and become more successful than the winners. Then some day she can come back and rub it in their faces. Make some lemonade out of those lemons.
