but I think it looks stupid on almost everyone who does it (might be a few tasty exceptions, but I'm not remembering any at the moment)

2. I almost always have some scruff going on
Not because I'm cultivating a look, but because my tender neckmeat turns to hamburger if I shave it too much.

3. It's to help guys like me to buy into the advertising mythos: "Yeah, I may sit around
with a beer in my hand, needing to wash my clothes and get a haircut and a shave, but if I buy an Acme Gizmo Widget, everbody'll notice that I'm really sexy schlub"

18. no, it's ANTI sexy because it means you can't touch him
sex is not just visual, well, i'm a woman, maybe it is just visual for some men or so they claim, but for a woman...a man with stubble is a man who is painful to kiss and touch his face

it causes like a carpet burn!

there is nothing sexy about that

it's a hostile thing, really, the guy is basically saying fuck you, he doesn't care what you feel or if it feels good to you

maybe it is a good thing, it warns you the guy is a narcisstic jerk and it is good to have those types labeled so you can run for your life.

hmmm

11. a family member who is 45 has started this
He says it makes him look like Robert de Niro. And then I noticed that many many men in that age range are doing exactly the same thing. Hair cut, but not close. Two day growth or more. Same shoes. Same black man purse. Same umbrella. Same jeans and jacket style.

So I guess it's a fad.

15. I work construction
I don't shave every day by any means. I do masonry, carpentry, drywall and more, all jobs that make you dirty. So I don't change my pants every day either. (everything else though) I shower every day, brush my teeth everyday, but I like construction for the reason that you are judged by your ability and not whether you shaved or wear a suit.

17. there was this guy called don johnson (miami vice)
he started it, i think in the 80s, but i don't know what happened to him or why the look survives

i think he got into drugs and maybe died or something?

the look is miserable, grow your 2 day beard if you must but don't expect anyone to kiss you, ugh, stubble HURTS!

a nice soft grown-out beard is fine, clean shaven is fine but the slob look...leave it to the drug addicts is my opinion

Why bother? Razor blades are too expensive!:grr:

When working I always take Sundays off to help replenish the oils in my skin - keeps it young. (I learned that years ago, when a moment of temporary lucidity led me to read an article in Playboy.)

23. MiddleFingerMom has to DEFINITELY stay on top of his stubble (baby-faced though he is).
.
.
.
It was big in the mid-80's -- championed mostly by George Michael from the group
"Wham" ...and Don Johnson from the TV series "Miami Vice". It can LOOK very
attractive (it can also look silly or disgusting if the growth is patchy).
.
By the late 80's, it had faded as a big fad... but I've noticed it more and more
again (those pesky cyclical fads) in the last 5 years or so).
.
The UK publication "The Guardian" declared it pretty dead in 1989, but here's
an article from around 1986 (which includes the following definition of "designer
stubble":
.
20th Century Words by John Ayto, describes designer stubble thus:
......noun (1987): a short bristly growth of stubble on a man's unshaven face,
......worn for a carefully groomed yet rugged and masculine appearance...

29. Upthread George Michaels is mentioned,
and another pioneer of this was Clint Eastwood. Before him, stubble was a widely-used indicator of evil; the equivalent of a neon sign saying "I'm the villain" flashing above the villain's head. He made it a symbol of the rough-edged-but-with-a-heart-of-gold good guy hero.

I'm another one of those guys whose neck gets shredded by shaving too often. Even with the five-blade-vibrating-gel-relasing-flexible-head-$25-a-box razor heads and super-uber-ultra-hydrating shaving cream, I still get eaten alive. The best solution I've ever been able to reach is to shave once a week. That way it's only painful and ugly for one day.

YMMV, as always.

30. Interesting take
Hi,
I just hate shaving period. I have a new electric now and have been going at least every other day, especially now that my beard comes in *white*, not even gray, grrr. I used to do the couple days stubble, but again, just because I hate shaving, not because of trying to go for some "look".

Interesting post, and interesting to read everyone's comments, thanks.

Peace
