One of my son's vocabulary words this week is "pawnshop". |
|
He's in 5th grade. He has to write three sentences for each word, including that one, for his homework tonight.
:wtf:

3. I thought the same thing so I looked it up. |

Apparently it can be either. But still...pawnshop? For a 10-year-old? Why not stripjoint or crackhouse? Blah.

Pawnshop: where Grandma's heirloom jewelry ended up. Stripjoint: where Sissy works to make her college tuition. Crackhouse: where Johnny was arrested and now has to serve three times the sentence of the banker doing blow.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=pawnshopThen he can learn the history of the word and wow his teacher and classmates. After reading the definition, it looks like it even has a connection to pirates :D
