The Safeway has a liquor department, deli, and a fair selection of good items in the produce section.

5. A little container of broccoli pasta salad from the deli counter, and a six-pack of Sapporo
...and they have the Sapporo on sale right now @ $7.99 (at least they do in Silicon Valley)...

9. Happy to oblige! That pasta salad sounds good.
The silicon valley Safeways are superior to ours; better produce and they had self-checkout long before we did.

Finally got them late last year.

12. They're playing catch-up on the self-checkouts...
...the one nearest me has them, a few other local ones don't, but it really makes a difference for me. It's a fast transaction, and I pack the groceries the way I like...refrigerated / frozen but also by the specific location where I store them at home so unpacking is a breeze.

The other big draw is the "Safeway 4 U" promo, where you add discounted items to your card online. I've gotten some real bargains on things like whole-bean coffee and other items I use frequently, or a couple of pounds of really nice-looking Roma tomatoes that I brought home to ripen for my homemade marinara sauce.

13. I must look into this new promo!
OK, I just signed up, I already have a club card so it wasn't hard.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'd never have know otherwise.

Even though I'm there every other day for gas and fresh foods.

23. be careful when you use that system
double check receipts - I have had a LOT of trouble, back to using actual paper coupons or printing out the list of your specials

it was pretty aggravating to me

26. Every time I purchase one of the "4 U" items...
...I look on the touch-screen to make sure it's the right price. So far, it's worked about 60% of the time, but you're right...some things I've added to the card don't price correctly in the store. The Safeway Website also lets you print a "shopping list" of specials you've selected. That's come in handy because I've gone to the store, didn't get the "4 U" price, had to call in one of the checkers, and their first question is always "Did you add it to your card" and the "shopping list" is proof that I did. The difference between printing out the list of specials offered to you versus printing out the "shopping list" is that the "shopping list" shows that you did in fact add the items to your card...the system just hasn't caught up with it yet.

At that point they log into the system, do an override on the item, manually enter my price, and I'm done.

My guess is that the system is still relatively new and not without bugs, but it's worth the extra effort of maintaining a "watchful eye" because the prices can be really good.

31. Just back, finally. Found the beer, then the woman, then we had a fight and I drank the beer...
...and with an abundance of caution I decided to walk home and avoid the Friday night DUI patrols.

But there's still some warm beer here.
