2. Go to the store with your S.O. and ask the salesperson if you can "try one out".
Be sure to bring bail money.

3. Mattresses are extremely subjective.
What for one person is insanely comfortable, could be like sleeping on a brick to others. Having said that, I recently picked up a Simmons BeautyRest and both myself and my significant other LOVE it. It was the only mattress that we tried out that we both found incredibly comfortable. Just touching the top, I thought it was too soft and for a minute or two while laying on it, I thought the top might have been too soft as well. But while the top is incredibly soft, it's on a much firmer foundation. I thought I wanted one of those memory foam mattresses, but now when I sleep on a memory foam mattress at my folks', I'm not nearly as comfortable.

I believe this is the model, if you're interested:

5. I was going to post a similar request tomorrow
So i am very interested in what folks say.
We looked earlier at tempur beds, but wow they are expensive. There is a knock off on the web, but I am leery of that.
The air beds seem expensive also.
We had waterbeds in the past. We are now trying to remember why we got rid of it. Mrs. Lib would like to try one again. But it may be hard to find a place to try one out again.
And what about the cat claws?

6. I got the knock off from the web!
It came from smartbargains.com and was way cheaper. I got a firm mattress with 2 inches of memory foam and 7 other layers of stuff I can't remember. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever owned. I was having pain in my back on waking, but now I feel great. I read up on what to look for in foam mattresses and picked the one I could afford and I am very happy with it. There are sites on memory foam online that are good sources of information. By the way the mattress is an 11 inch. Good Luck!

7. A $200 mattress temperpedic topper may do it.
A good mattress on its own will probably be north of a thou.

11. If you're in a warm climate memory foam retains heat
more so than a regular mattress. We have a 12 yr. old Stearns and Foster mattress which has the pillowtop on both sides (we flip it end to end and then over regularly), and on my side a feather topper (over the pad, under the sheet) which gets fluffed every couple of days. Our preference is for a firm spring mattress with supportive coils and a soft topper. Just remember that over time, everything begins to lose the ability to "rebound" back. Even Tempur Pedic over time loses the ability to bounce back.

12. Costco

Best deals anywhere. The whole point of mattress marketing is to baffle you with bullsit. Costco cuts straight to the chase.
