Top 10 Led Zeppelin Songs Not Constantly On The Radio

In lieu of picking the five best Zep albums for this blog, we instead picked the ten best Zep songs you will more than likely never hear on terrestrial radio, unless Rocks Off is the DJ, or you live in the listening area of a really bad-ass college radio station with an open-minded "Get The Led Out" programmer.

So this is basically a list of songs that aren't "Rock and Roll", "Black Dog," "Immigrant Song," "Dancing Days," "Communication Breakdown" or even "Fool In the Rain."

2.) "The Rover" (Physical Graffiti) (lynne note - this is one of my favorite songs!)
3.) "The Wanton Song" (Physical Graffiti) (lynne note - I would have picked "Night Flight" from the 5 songs on side 4 of Physical Graffiti but that's just me)
4.) "Out On the Tiles" (Led Zeppelin III)
5.) "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" (Led Zeppelin III)
6.) "Carouselambra" (In Through the Out Door )
7.) "That's The Way" (Led Zeppelin III)
8.) "Sick Again" (Physical Graffiti)
9.) "Achilles' Last Stand" (Presence )
10.) "Bring It On Home" (Led Zeppelin II)

1. Oh God, Bron-Y-Aur is on all the time on our classic rock station here. But the song *I* would put

on that list is "Gallows Pole." When that banjo comes in, that song fucking COOKS. And their version of "When The Levee Breaks."

Because "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" from LZ III is a completely different animal - although it could still be one you hear on the radio.

The Stomp is the one I hear on the radio here. I don't think I've ever heard Bron-Yr-Aur non-stomp on the radio. It is lovely.

Very cool piece of music, and hard as hell to play convincingly:) I've thrown a minor amount of delay on top to give it more of that multitracked album sound.

3. The Rover is my favorite Led Zeppelin song, but

I would count that as "constantly on the radio" even though I know it probably isn't anymore; however, as far as popular music is concerned, almost nothing good is constantly on the radio anymore; so when the radio mattered, which, at least for me, was about 25+ years ago, The Rover was one of the more commonly played songs. Night Flight would be my choice, as that has never been played a lot.

This was the B-side to "Immigrant Song." Never performed live by the group. Never put on an album before their 1990 boxed set. :banghead:

But it's one of my favorite Zep tunes.

21. One of my favorites, too - our local station played that a fair amount starting at least in 1981,

so I never knew it to be a "rare" Zeppelin tune until much later in life.

...my first choice was "The Rover."

I won an hour-long guest DJ spot on San Jose's KOME in the late 70s. You had to submit a playlist, and if they liked it, you got on. I got on, and one of the songs on the list was "The Rover" (along with "Won't Get Fooled Again" and Aerosmith's version of "Milkcow Blues.")

12. "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", and "Since I Been Lovin' You" are

my favorites that don't get played on the radio much.

I love Led Zeppelin.

1. "Since I've Been Loving You" - LZ III (Page at his bluesy best, and Plant tones it down below helium-parody range)
2. "Tea For One" - Presence (again, Page ripping some of his best blues riffs)
3. "Tangerine" - LZ III (so pleased this made the soundtrack of 'Almost Famous', for it has always been a favorite)
4. "No Quarter" - Houses of the Holy (the best song on that album which doesn't get airplay, and my co-favorite along with 'The Rain Song' from it)
5. "Black Country Woman" - Physical Graffiti (Page and Plant sounded like they absorbed half the Piedmont Blues canon, venturing beyond their usual theft from Delta Blues)
6. "Dazed and Confused" - Led Zeppelin (requires chemical aid, and maybe being 17 again - an obvious sentimental choice)
7. "I'm Gonna Crawl" - In Through The Out Door (poignant because it was the last cut off of the last album released in Bonham's lifetime. That fact adds an unintended element of sadness which fits Page's blues touch)
8. "Candy Store Rock" - Presence (weirder than 'The Crunge' and more fun than 'Hot Dog')
9. "Black Mountain Side" - Led Zeppelin (fine chicken-pickin' from the debut, and an indicator of experiments to come)
10. "The Crunge" - Houses of the Holy (their whacked-out tribute to James Brown)
