5. Many, especially before Wagner's time
would say that Beethoven was the soul of Germany. Many column inches were dedicated to the topic by the likes of E.T.A. Hoffmann and A.B. Marx. Schubert even thought so. Wagner, in his own writings was wishy-washy on Beethoven. It was almost like he hated to love his music.
