I'd never seen it. I thought, "Okay, it's a part of culture; I've heard how violent it is." It DID in fact get me to say "OH MY GOD."

I lasted fifteen minutes, during which time the torture never abated. This is the sickest torture porn I have ever seen in my life.

3. Proof the man is a HUGE pervert.
A sick violent SOB. I never liked Mel, even when my friends were in love with him back in the 80s. Always something off about him.

BTW, nice movie to show to celebrate Passover!

4. Astoundingly antisemitic.
I don't care what the purported facts are, this is pure psychological manipulation, and it's ugly.

8. I chose to never see it
and never will. Even before I heard what a jerk Mel Gibson is.

"Torture porn" sounds like an apt description, but I can't make a judgment call cause I won't see the damn flick.

24. I'm with you. But, then, I avoid film violence as much as possible anyway.
If I watch a movie, I expect to be entertained, not revolted by violence or scared shitless.

9. Just to show how historically reliable the story is,
there are equally ancient sources that say Jesus was:

1. Hung

2. Impaled

3. Crucified

Take your choice.

I like Mel as an actor, but there's no denying that the guy really is a sick son of a bitch. I wouldn't want to be in a locked room with him.

17. I never heard how grossly violent it was - thanks
I did hear a lot of other stuff about it that was bad but not that it was like a slasher movie or anything like that. I never wanted to watch it anyway, but now I'll make it a point not to.

Thanks for the heads up.

20. they wanted little kids seeing it. they took them to it, rented theaters
this was the beginning of the nasty in spring 2003, when the fundamentalists turned to hate. my kids were going to a christian private school, and this movie fed it. was sick.

i had to go in and talk to teachers and tell them under no circumstance were they to allow my children any part of that movie

25. Someone just told me a story of being in a theater full of 7 to 12 year olds and their parents.
The kids were getting hysterical. Some got to leave. Some did not. That kind of thing can do damage to a child's mind, and I mean that literally.

intellectual, articulate, glasses wearing son and concerned about bullying.

i was from calif and had never encountered a fundamentalist. this time was so fuckin educational. i am so glad we all experienced it for the understanding we gained, and at the time all this was developing.

it was/is very harmful to the kids and was evident at the time

it so intensified the violence and what was done to him, that it took away fromt he exact message he was giving. instead of forgive, it created hate.

21. I've always liked the description of it from the first season of "Weeds."
Nancy is supplying pot to Doug's son, who says he sold out for a showing of The Passion of the Christ.

The kid says: "Christianity my ass. It's a straight-up snuff film."

23. In Catholic Churches, the reading for Palm Sunday is an account of the Passion.
I used to lead children's liturgy; each Sunday I took kids about 10 and younger into another room to read them a simplified version of the readings and discuss at their level.

I thought the Passion account so horrific, that Palm Sunday we colored Easter "He is Risen" pictures. The Passion is not for children.

If you're not familiar with Scripture, try reading one of the Passion accounts. They are very stark and surprisingly modern. Even if you think Jesus was only a small town rabbi, it's shocking to read how he was murdered by the system of his day.

That said, any attempt to accurately film what happened amounts to s torture fest.

27. Yes, I did grow up in a Southern Baptist family and have read the Bible.
The Passion is a terrible, terrible story. It's hard to imagine that people did, and still do, that kind of thing to one another. The fact that Gibson would imagine it in its most horrific, and possibly fictional, detail and run it up a flag pole and that people would go into some ind of ecstacy over it is waaaaaaay to Clockwork Orange for me, iykwim.

Good for you and the coloring project.

26. Never saw it. Didn't think it would be entertaining.
I like my violence implied or cartoonishly unrealistic unless it really is integral to the story.
