I think I need to take better care of myself...
I smoke.

And I have this sick desire to own a motorcycle that can break the 200 mph barrier.

I've already broken 140 mph. And I laid my bike down at 50 mph.

I tend to enjoy things that are dangerous. I think it's a product of complete disregard for my personal wellbeing.

I'm starting to make some of my family members nervous.

Assuming you don't kill yourself on the bike, fun-filled doctor visits loom on the horizon.

3. I was you once
Now I'm me. I gave up the smokes at 24. Now the doctors want me to give up just about every other damn thing.

Enjoy it while you are able!

4. As a parent, I have to say this...
One of my biggest fears is that a young person winds up with a brain injury. It is life altering for not only the person w/ the injury, but for everyone who deals with that person for the rest of his/her life. I know when you're young you have a sense of invincibility, but all it takes is one pebble in the way of your bike wheel at 50 mph and your whole world turns upside down. And of course you've heard the synonym "organ donor" for motorcycle riders, especially those tempted by 200 mph. Yeah I sound like an old fogey, but you can still have fun and get thrills w/out endangering your life quite so blatantly.

What could possibly go wrong, given with the skill you've demonstrated to date?

11. I agree with Heidi
I'm also 21 and I smoke too (it's really the only reliable way to maintain 8% bodyfat, am I right?).

While I don't own a motorcycle, I have gotten my dad's 1973 AMC Hornet up to almost 80 mph and I tell you that is KILLER! So yeah, go for it - I'm sure you'll break 200 in no time and be here on DU to tell us all about it.

What a sweet ride.

9. You need a productive career that serves your need for excitement:
say, setting off dynamite in high mountain snowpack to trigger small avalanches to prevent big avalanches

or rescuing people in storms on the high seas

or maybe defusing landmines

12. You're looking for the next direction...
... so, try something else that takes you to a different edge.

May I suggest doing something you are totally scared to death of just because .... See? So much from which to choose.

Save up for it by laying down the smokes. That's got to be a costly habit (I won't lecture you on the physical stuff).

Do this for yourself. It's the right time now.

14. Smoked all through my 20's, quit at 30. I realized after quitting how much of a social
thing it was -- a friend who is always with you, always part of connecting with friends. Find the lowest tar/nic smokes you can and wean yourself to fewer. It's easier not to smoke now that indoor smoking is banned practically everywhere. As for the motorcycles? As a Mom, I'm terrified of them . . . but there's a wonderful life ahead of you -- enjoy!

17. Meh. The time to do that kind of stuff is when
you still, at some gut level, believe that you are immortal. One day you'll be looking in the mirror some morning getting ready to shave or whatever, and you'll wonder who the hell that old fart is that is staring back at you. And when that happens it will occur to you that you don't do any of that fun stuff any more, and it is kind of hard to remember when, or why, you stopped.

But, in the meantime, there is still skydiving, hang gliding, white water rafting, free diving, SCUBA, rock climbing, sports car racing . . . and all kinds of other neat stuff.

Yep, I did all that shit, and other stuff too. Except for the cigarettes, and the fact that when I was your age the 200mph crotch rockets didn't exist.

Frankly, I'm amazed that I survived it all. But now that I'm sixty, and well past the point of wondering who the old fart in the mirror is, I'm glad I did it - every scary damned bit of it. Because I do not wonder what it would have been like if I had. And I don't suffer from the regret of knowing that I didn't do it when I could, and realizing that now it is just too damned late to even try.

Your time is now. Enjoy it while it lasts. It is all too brief. The trick is not to push the edge of the envelope that last little bit . . . .

19. Yup. Or else he'll die from it. Many do.
Take a raft trip in South America. Trek in Nepal. Adventurous, not very life-threatening, thrilling.
Sounds like there's a bit more than feeling immortal. Seem like a bit of a death wish there.
Might want to get some help for that.
I realize a lot of the conventional lounge wisdom is "go for it", drink all the the time when you have a problem, and the like.
There are other paths.
I've done plenty of adventurous things in my life without unduly risking it.

21. Well, you have your point of view,
I have mine, and the OP no doubt has his.

And, yes, I was accused by some of having a death wish when I was younger. I was also accused of it when I was on active duty (AF). I have always thought, however, that it was closer to the truth to say that I was, somehow, hooked on adrenaline. I definitely lived for the rush.

But whatever it was, I managed to survive it. And had a great time in the process.

Now that I am an old fart, and have slowed down quite a bit, I engage in more contemplative activities, many of the sort that you suggest. In that vein, may I suggest Machu Picchu, or some of the Mesoamerican sites in Central America? I thought that they were quite interesting.

22. Thanks for your thoughts Moondog
I have been to Machu Picchu, in combination with a 7 day raft trip on the Rio Tambopata, in Peru.
I loved it. I'm happy they didn't build the tram they were threatening up to Machu Picchu. The springs in Aguas Calientes were very nice. It was Sierra Club trip.

I'm hoping my grandkids, now one and three, will be adventurous, but mostly safely so.
