The little Love-god lying once asleep, Laid by his side his heart-inflaming brand, Whilst many nymphs that vowed chaste life to keep Came tripping by; but in her maiden hand The fairest votary took up that fire Which many legions of true hearts had warmed; And so the General of hot desire Was, sleeping, by a virgin hand disarmed. This brand she quenched in a cool well by, Which from Love's fire took heat perpetual, Growing a bath and healthful remedy, For men diseased; but I, my mistress' thrall, Came there for cure and this by that I prove, Love's fire heats water, water cools not love.

My husband and I once turned a corner near Shakespeare's house and were met by a teaching colleague on some tour who had just said to his wife, "This would be the spot to run into Mr. and Mrs. Dink!" And he did!

Did Shakespeare really believe all that crap about witchcraft, or was he merely trying to please King James?

8. Saw Richard III at Stratford, late 70's. |

"A horse, a horse; my Kingdom for a horse!" etc., and other genius tragic stuff. Intimate, in-the-round staging, great ribbons of blood; left an impression on me.
Shakespeare is like looking up at the universe; you suddenly realize how great your potential, and how small you really are.
