Should "BBQ" be pronounced "bee-bee-cue" or "bar-bee-cue"?

Some TV reporter is promoting a piece on 'the best "bee-bee-cue" restaurants in town' and it strikes me about the same as pronouncing "Xmas" as "ex-mas."

BBQ is an acronym for barbeque. Same question could apply to LOL. Pronounced "el-oh-el" or "lull"

Xmas isn't just shorthand. I think it is often used by people who don't want to call it Christmas.

Like scuba or laser. I'd say BBQ was just an abbreviation but there may be some fancier term for it. I'm sure the grammar & english police will be along shortly to fill us both in. :D
