Anyone on SSI? Got a question ...
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 06:55 PM by Akoto
I've been on for six months due to an incurable chronic pain condition. They have called me in tomorrow for a review of my living circumstances. Don't know the formal name for the meeting, but that's what it's about. I have to bring in bank statements, receipts, and so on. Needless to say, I am really nervous. Does anyone with more time on SSI disability know what I can probably expect?

Don't know why I'm nervous, as I've done nothing wrong. My records are complete, and I keep myself to one small personal purchase a month, usually a book to read in bed. I guess it's the fear that the outcome may upset my already precarious living situation. Certainly can't afford a lower payment than I receive at present. :S

1. I worked for social security for 30 years
I didn;t work all that much with SSi but from your description it is clear what is going on. You have been called in for what is called a redetermination. It is routine, everyone has them periodically and they are required by law. Almost certainly No one thinks you did anything wrong. SSi eligibility and benefit amounts depend on such things as income, financial resources and living arrangements. These things can potentially change in anyone's life. People don't always report changes and don't always understand what to report. So bottom line; go for your appointment, provide the requested info and documentation to the best of your ability and, unless your finances have changed, everything will probably be ok. If something goes wrong you can appeal. I'll tell you a secret about SSA and the people who work there - there is too much work to do and giving you a hard time involves much more effort and work than not. So, no one has any reason at all to make your life more difficult.

4. They do that to me every so often
It shouldn't be any worries. I think the reason they do that is in case you miraculously were healed or hit the lottery. I feel ya though... any lowering of "payment and oh dear!

My disability is quite obvious, so the whole process irks me because I sometimes have to schedule a doc's appt for confirmation. Hehe, some things just don't grow back! ;)
