Road Report: Helping each other out. |
|
Even though I don't leave the state of Indiana now days, I'm still trucking it up. I recently got a local job here in Richmond, my new hometown, and had to learn a new kind of trucking. I used to think that as we age it gets harder to learn new things. It seemed that way to me as I've been approaching middle age. But I picked up the new stuff in two weeks of training and now I'm doing it on my own. They tell me I'm doing a good job, too. I still need a hand every once in a while, and I'll admit I'm no expert yet, but the people who have helped me have been happy to do it. I also help people at my new job. When things are slow with the dedicated gig I have there, I run extra loads for the boss or cover for other drivers. Things are going good. I'm not making a bunch of money, but I am proud of what I'm doing and I'm getting by okay.
I get helped out by my co-workers and other truckers as well, and also by the people who I work with at our customers' businesses. I do my best to return the favors. It really warms my heart to see working people helping each other out. I'm all about the workers, yes indeed. :)
When I was in high school I would joke sometimes that I was going to be the garbage man when I got out of school. I've always had a self-deprecating sense of humor and in my mind at the time being the garbage man wasn't too high a post in life to esteem to. Looking back on it I guess that was kind of snobby. I didn't really know where I was going at the time, but I thought it would likely be to a comfortable middle class lifestyle. Well, as it turns out, I'm now the garbage man sometimes. I don't do the residential routes. I haul these big-ass containers full of trash out to the landfill as a part of my job. Maybe I was psychic?

I stepped out for a smoke and came back to find her hanging out on my keyboard. My catnese skills are a little rough, but I think it says something to the effect that she approves of this message and that she'd like to say hi to all the kitties out there and their fine servants here at DU.
Anyway, here's to the working class :toast:. Together we can change this country if we realize where our interests lie and that we are the majority. We need to get together and help each other out.

2. Thanks, Tikki. That's very kind of you. |

It sounds like you've been there if you aren't there now and working your way through college is very admirable. I'm sure that at the very least you can empathize.
