my mum died
diagnosed with stomach cancer April 13, she passed away in a hospice between the royal wedding (she was unconscious but I hope she heard it on the TV in her room) and the death of Osama (DAMN I was sorry she missed that)......an indomitable Brit to the end, one of her last declarations voiced her pride at living longer than Elizabeth Taylor. Mum was 80.

It's hard loosing your mom, no matter what their age or yours.

5. I'm sorry to hear that, Skittles
She looks like one of those cheerful yet no-nonsense English women.

I lost my mother in February, and it's truly a bereft feeling.

6. I'm sorry for your loss, Skittles.
.
.
.
My mom also died at 80 in hospice... the day after 9/11 (I'm NOT sorry she missed that).
.
.
.
She had led a long full life and was ready, even eager... as she knew that "life" didn't
mean much for her anymore -- and her belief system told her that all those who had
passed before her that she missed so much would be waiting for her with open arms...
no matter what she found on the other side.
.
.
.Your mum is at peace now. I hope you find (or have already found) the same.
.
.
.

You, me, and all the people whose mothers are no longer with us... :grouphug:
In a month it will have been a year since my mom died, and I still think of things to talk about with her. She lived across the country but we talked on the phone a lot.
It must be especially hard because your mum didn't live long after the diagnosis was made. I hope you got to spend time with her in recent years.

115. My Canadian mum Joan was born on Xmas day, 1924
...consequently sharing a b'day with Rod Serling, creator of "Twilight Zone". Believe me, both scared me equally when I was a little kid!

But later on, when I returned home after living in London for awhile, Mum and I became great friends. She had me at age 30, but sometimes I got on with her better than people my own age. I always told her if we'd been peers, we'd've been calling my Dad for bail money at least once in our lives.

I used to hear girls go on about how their Mums drove them crazy, how they criticized and undermined them, and I appreciated even more how lucky I was to have Joan for a mother. She never judged my Boho lifestyle, never told me I should be married with kids. I think a part of her always enjoyed she had a free-spirited daughter. When I started working for the airline industry, she and Dad took full advantage of my travel benefits, and went all over the world. Many times during the 90s, I'd meet my parents in Italy, Spain or France and get tipsy on good European wine in sidewalk trattorias. Great times.

I lost Joan at the beginning of 2007, just after the holidays and her 82nd b'day. Like your mum, she was diagnosed, then went quickly, leaving us all the poorer for it. I can tell you, it does get less painful, but you will never stop missing your mother. Joan and I watched Charles and Diana get married in 1981; so sorry she couldn't see Diana's son do the same. She never saw Obama win the election either, which would have delighted her.

What got me through the worst of my grief was knowing my mother wouldn't want me to be sad--she'd expect me to live my own life to its fullest and not waste time mourning. Also, knowing we had done our best to put aside any stupid issues, shared such rich experiences during her life, and that she'd been pretty content with what life had given her helped a lot. I know you'll find your own ways of getting through it, but I hope some of this can soothe a bit. Take care, remember her fondly and look after yourself--cuz that's what Mum would want!

120. Sorry I missed that, I usually just follow news topics
My Dad died back in February but he made it to 90. His last days were comfortable and he was alert and interested until hours before he passed. I think he just decided it was time. He couldn't be the active, engaged person he had always been. I think he decided it was better to pass than be so crippled that he couldn't do what he loved.

I hope you have the support to help you deal with the loss. For me, I'm pretty sure it will be years before I adjust even with family support. My Dad and I never had a really close relationship because we were so similar. Stubborn and not vocal about feelings. It wasn't until his last days that I was able to express how much he meant to me and what I had done in my life.

There is never a wrong time to tell those in your life how much they mean and have affected you.

We are with you Skittles

There's not much I can say so I will simply say this

The Little Ship

I stood watching as the little ship sailed out to sea. The setting sun tinted his white sails with a golden light, and as he disappeared from sight a voice at my side whispered, “He is gone”.

But the sea was a narrow one. On the farther shore a little band of friends had gathered to watch and wait in happy expectation. Suddenly they caught sight of the tiny sail and, at the very moment when my companion had whispered, “He is gone” a glad shout went up in joyous welcome, “Here he comes!”

Deepest sympathies to you and your family in this time of loss. Your mom must have been an amazing lady. She raised a pretty cool daughter in you, and from what I recall you've mentioned having been an Air Force kid which means your mom probably moved a few times over the years with your dad. THAT by itself speaks volumes to me about the indomitable spirit she must have been.

Again, I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

124. Aw damn...
You are my absolute favorite DU'er. I can only imagine your pain...

Skittles, I can only offer a point of view offered by my Grandpa's Pastor that at first really pissed me off but when I contemplated it later, made perfect sense:

When my Grandpa died, and I got private time with him (His Pastor), he told me that grief was a wholly selfish emotion. I sat there, tears streaming down my face, wondering who the fuck this guy was, telling me I was selfish for grieving over my Grandfather's death.

When I was finally able to think rationally again, after we put Him in the ground, I reflected on what His Pastor said. After a while, his words made sense. I wasn't grieving for the death of my Grandfather, but for his absence in MY life.

He was spot on. He also told me that I should never miss an opportunity to celebrate my Grandfather's life. I don't.

I'm so sorry for your loss. As I said, you are my favorite DU'er, INDEED.

Regale us with stories about your Mom.

You are awesome, and I bet it's the influence your Mom had on your life that makes you that way.

Much Love
Chris

125. Skittles sweetie, I'm very sorry for your loss.
I've been fortunate to see other pics of your happy family, and now I see the lovely matriarch who made it all possible. Thank you for sharing this with us, and for being here at DU.

She lives here in you and in the humor and bright revelation of self you share with us.

I lost my dad in 2002, and after the sorrow passed, I found he grew greater and nearer to me in my heart as time passed. That is what their lifetime of love does for us.

Condolences to you and your family, she raised a beautiful person, and that is how we know of her own beauty.
