2. "Aguirre, Der Zorn Des Gottes".
"Aguirre, The Wrath Of God", by Werner Herzog. Starring Klaus Kinski.

Astonishing film. Simply astonishing.

One of three films I've seen (the other two being "Jacob's Ladder" and "Wild At Heart") that are about a descent into madness that make one feel like they are going crazy right along with the characters on screen.

That's a very frightening feeling...

8. M is still so relevant to this day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUDUbxsNjV0

The motivation that fear had on the population was tangible. The hysteria, knee-jerk accusations of totally innocent people. Peter Lorre was astounding, to be able to put a sympathetic face on such a character.

I liked the tie in with Inspector Lohmann also being in Dr. Mabuse. And the cinematography in all of Lang's films was wonderful.

In addition to those already mentined, I also enjoyed Wings of Desire, and Der Untergang. I also saw one recently called "Das Experiment" based on the Stanford Prison Experiment. It was quite well done.

of Emil und die Detektiven is a lot of fun. I saw it at a film festival.

It's been updated to be the story of a boy whose money is stolen when he falls asleep on the train. (He's on the way to stay with someone while his father is in the hospital.) Landing penniless in Berlin, he meets up with other children, who help him out. Since he has a good idea of which fellow passenger stole his money, he enlists the other children to help.

The original story was written in the 1920s, but the movie takes place in a contemporary, multicultural Berlin, where pre-teen children ride skateboards and know how to rap. Much of the humor comes from the fact that children ages 10 and up are fairly competent but still don't understand the adult world entirely.

ON EDIT: It's available in Region 2 (European) format only, so you'd have to watch it on your computer or on a region-free player.

15. One I saw at a film festival
Edelweiss Piraten "Edelweiss Pirates" was the name of a gang of anti-Nazi youths in the last days of World War II. They not only harassed the Nazis in large and small ways but protected those who were in trouble, often at great personal risk. (One character has a brother in the Hitler Youth.)
