So I watched Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour on HBO yesterday
Let's see:

  • Multiple Costume Changes - Check
  • Posse of Gay Male Dances who do multiple dance sequences where either they fondle her or she fondles them - Check
  • Two female backup singers - Check
  • Multiple scenary changes - Check
  • Black & White behind the curtains view - Check

Essentially what I saw was the same exact concert that Madonna did back 20 years ago during her Blonde Ambition tour, which was also on HBO.

I'll give Lady Gaga credit - she can sing, but she needs to break out of the Madonna mode and find her niche in the pop world else she'll die out in a few more years.

1. I watched it as well --
and was thoroughly underwhelmed. I didn't find it very fun or entertaining, in fact I think she took herself w-a-y too seriously, and I agree that she is retreading Madonna.

She is certainly a talented singer, but I think, after a lackluster early career, she made a calculated decision to go for what will get her as much press coverage as possible.

2. That last sentence - exactly how Madonna did it
I think the gal has potential but not if she's trying to be a Madonna Jr. And I heard that "Born this Way" song and the critics are right - it sounds just like "Express Yourself" - two songs that are trying to tell you it's ok being you to a strong pop beat.

5. I'll never forget that first MTV Awards appearance --
with her writhing around the stage in a wedding dress.:D She was all anyone could talk about the next day. Very mediocre singing talent, very smart promoter and business woman.

3. Half the songs were lip-synched
It was really bothering me and I wasn't even at the concert. I would be pissed if I paid actual money for her concert and she wasn't singing.

She was doing a lot of dancing, but I felt like it was a seen it before for me.

4. To be honest, I don't see shows like that as concerts, more like musicals
I mean it's a far cry from what you get if it was U2 or Roger Waters in tour.

I mean, with the dancing it's almost impossible to do any type of quality singing for an extended period of time - I guess they figure since they are dancing, giving a 'storyline' and fancy sets, they can let it slide on the actual singing.

But that one song she sang where she played the piano, she said it was a new song - she was definately singing there and that probably was my favorite of all the songs. She really can sing, not sure why she has to rely on all the tired tricks to give us a concert.

6. I agree
Lady Gaga is a character/Madonna impersonator. I have a feeling she's just not very interesting on her own. Some people have the "X Factor" that makes them compelling to viewers/listeners (such as Madonna). Others don't, no matter how much talent they might have. Without the costumes and makeup, Lady gaga might not be interesting enough to make it. She really does need to stay away from Madonna similarities though. I got Madonna vibes during the concert too (not in a good way). I found the talking she did during the concert really annoying. She acted like everything she said was so profound.

I loved her first 2 CDs and have been disappointed with the 2 singles released from the third CD. I hope the rest of "Born This Way" is better.
