6. Hiking once in Pennsylvania, I rounded a bend and came within six or eight feet of a bear.

Bear had been enjoying some blue-berries along the trail and did not regard our appearance as improving property values in the neighborhood. My party chatted in quiet pleasant tones as we backed slowly away. Bear contemplated this momentarily and decided not to get to know us better, so snorted and ambled off in a different direction, probably hoping for a more restful blue-berry-pickin spot with less wildlife

8. Oh my! Bear was right, of course. Humans don't do much for property values.

We stayed at a lovely old dude ranch in the mountains just north of Yellowstone one summer. One of the other guests jogged the mountain trails every morning. And sang at the top of his lungs while he did it. Smart thing to do, in terms of bear surprises, but I was always amazed that at that altitude he could get enough oxygen to both sing and run!
