One of my dogs is going to another home tomorrow |
|
He is a beautiful, sweet boy who showed up bone skinny and scared on Easter morning. I saw him first, told my husband about him, and he sent our daughters out to lure him to the back yard so we could feed him and put out a notice in case anyone was looking for him. We named him Pete because he showed up on Easter like Peter Cottontail. I was glad when no one claimed him, because he is one of the sweetest natured dogs I've ever had. He gradually overcame most of his fear, and now he and my other dog play when they aren't sleeping. He has put on a lot of weight, and he is even more gorgeous and sweet than when he first came to live with us.
About a month ago, it became clear that our future where we live was uncertain. We had to start talking about plans for leaving, and what we would do with our pets. Our cats come with us wherever we go, and I am afraid that we couldn't find a good home for my grumpy dog Rosie, so I want to take her with us if possible, too. One of my husband's students saw his notice about the dog online, and he asked if he could take him. He wants a gentle dog he can run with and take to the desert, both things which Pete would love. It was a hard decision, and I'm going to miss Pete and so is Rosie. I know giving him to someone else is the most sensible thing to do, but I'm not happy about it.
Pete leaving is just one of several upcoming changes I'm not happy about, and I'm trying not to get too sad and depressed over all of it. You would think a former military brat would know better than to get too attached, to a place and to my pets and even other people, but somehow I let myself get too attached and I hate having to deal with it.

Best wishes for all of you during your transition.

3. That is a very painful decision, but it sounds like you are doing the |
|
right thing for Pete and for your other animals. You have essentially 'fostered' Pete and done a wonderful thing by doing so. I know you're sad  but take some comfort in knowing you did a very good thing. Lots of people foster animals and the goodbye is probably always hard.

6. I'm sorry you're having to give up your Pete. |
|
Sounds like you were meant to "foster mom" him, and he's lucky you did.
Lots of changes. Isn't it nice that, wherever you go, The Lounge is just a click away?
