1. Had three of those run in front of my vehicle today. |
|
Two were a mama and her very young fawn. Was only doing about 20 at that time, and they were a decent distance ahead of me, so the baby wasn't in any danger. On the other hand, I was doing 55 when the first one ran across the road. Fortunately, it, too made it across in plenty of time.

2. I wish we had deer in my neighborhood! |

I know they can destroy gardens...
Even so.
Thanks for the pic!

8. Hostas a salad for deer |
|
They also love pansies. I had pansies in the beds next to the front porch and after they ate the flowers, they pulled the plants up and ate them!
What they don't eat - so far - crape myrtles, hollies, coonties, sago palms, oak trees, African iris, Louisiana iris, day lilies, narcissus, and gladiolas. Everything else I have tried so far has been deer food.
We have a herd of about eight that come around the house every morning and evening. I can walk out on the porch and they just look at me. Next doe season I may borrow a gun and get me some venison for the freezer - they are overpopulated right now.

9. Most of our day lilies don't make it through the season. |
|
After they eat the hostas, they go for the lilies. As soon as a bud starts to appear, the eat the top off. If it does manage to flower, they will leave it alone. They just eat the buds. Same goes for tiger lilies.
Last year I made a spray of hot sauce, garlic and eggs and sprayed everything. Smelled like huevos rancheros! It worked pretty well. But this year it doesn't seem to deter them. I'm building a fence around our small veggie garden this year.
It's a PAIN dealing with these critters.

12. We don't have many day lilies and they are up on the terraces around the house |
|
So maybe that is why they are not eating them - though that did not save some of the plants I put in the first year we were here! If you want bulb plants, try narcissus (daffodils and paper whites) and iris. I've seen the deer browsing in the bed with the Louisiana iris without eating the leaves or the flowers. And my African iris seem to be bullet proof - they survive drought, neglect and the deer don't touch them at all.
The paper white narcissus that I have are all from one bunch that survived from the old house that was on the farm when we bought it. I keep digging and dividing them and putting them in more places and they are perfectly happy being ignored the rest of the time. They bloom in the winter here in North Florida and it's nice to have some flowers even when it's cold.
Your concoction sounds as though it would discourage the deer BUT I react to peppers and anything with capsaicin so I can't use it.
I guess I shouldn't be too pissed at the deer. For over thirty years, they grazed this field and now we put a house in the middle of their favorite grazing spot. They probably think we plant stuff they like to eat to make up for taking their grazing away.

7. I inspired a neighbor to grow tomatoes a few years ago. |
|
I have a fenced garden. The neighbor did not. The deer waited until the tomatoes were nearly ripe before picking every last one of the neighbor's tomatoes.
The deer and I have an agreement. They get everything outside my fenced garden. I keep what is inside. That includes the raspberries woven in the fence. They eat on the outside of the fence.
Roses, hostas, tulips - all sacrificial to the deer.

3. I'm not really enamored with them anymore. |
|
Came home from a football game last year to see about a dozen in my drive way. We see them in our back yard all the time. They eat EVERYTHING!
