3. My dad.
He was ahead of his time.

Girls growing up in the 1950's and 60's were never told they could achieve whatever they wanted; they particularly were not told that by men.

Dad was different. He believed in me from Day One.

Thank you, Dad. You made all the difference.

I miss you.

8. My Dad - Died May 10, 2009.

Registered Nurse.

Vietnam veteran.

Swayed with the political winds most of his life, and took a surprise hard turn to the right after September 11, 2001.

Came to his senses, and cast his vote for Barack Obama in 2008, the last election he would get to vote in.

9. My Dad
Truck driver, die hard Teamster, champion of labor, Korea vet '50-51, two purple hearts. Lifelong Democrat.

He was a first rate hardass that didn't take any shit from anybody. He sure had a soft spot for that little dog though. 1930-2007 RIP

12. My dad was a lifelong democrat.
And I am too, because of him. He loved JFK and hated Nixon! LOL

He was born in 1922 and died unexpectedly in 1996. His passing left a huge hole in our family.

I remember thinking at the time "Thanks for holding on one more day"...I didn't want every April Fools Day for the rest of my life to be the anniversary of my dad's passing.

18 years ago...I lived in Sunnyvale at the time, and my parents were in Redwood City. My sister shared a duplex with them...she lived in the top, they lived in the bottom. I got the call from her literally 5 minutes before I was going to get in the car and head to work.

I remember driving up and over the hill by the hangar at Moffett Field in Mountain View, on the Bayshore Freeway (101). I had a mix CD in the car at that time and the song that was playing as I passed the hangar was the live version of "Home By The Sea" from the Genesis CD "The Way We Walk Volume 2: The Longs."

18 years later and when I hear that song I can't forget that day and that drive to say goodbye to my dad for the last time.

15. RIP, Daddy, 1920--2001
He also loved his dogs. He had a basset hound named Barney, who the rest of us thought was slightly psychotic. No one could touch that dog's ears or paws. Barney became partially paralyzed in his hind legs, a problem experienced by long-bodied dogs like dauchsunds and bassets. The vet told Daddy that he should put Barney to sleep because the dog would get pressure sores from walking on the joints instead of his paws. Daddy told the vet to give him a few days to think about it. Daddy found a pair of baby shoes one of the grandchildren had outgrown and cut out the leather around the toes. Then he wrapped Barney's hind legs in gauze and put those shoes on him. For years, he rewrapped the bandages twice a day, even though Barney often snapped at him. That dog never got a pressure sore; the vet took pictures of Barney in his shoes, said he'd never seen anything that worked so well before. Daddy had his faults, but I still miss him.
