1. Good god, I couldn't even begin to guess
I'm still in either ACOK or ASOS, depending on which POV I'm following... I'm really reading these books in a weird way, not even backasswards, sort of sideasswards. I'm most intrigued by Arya and Jon and Sam's stories so am furthest along on theirs.

The only thing I've learned so far about this author is that you cannot predict what the hell he's going to pull out of his hat. "Burn them all!" is probably what will eventually happen.

2. A better question is whether it will be 6 years before the next one is out
I'm 56... I don't have the time to wait 10-12 years for him to finish up at the rate he writes.

5. I hope and pray that GRRM has 10-12 years, as well.
He's not exactly the healthiest looking guy.

13. And, he's a good liberal, too
and, who knows what the pressure of finishing before the HBO series catches up to the books will do to his stress/blood pressure.

15. I didn't know that, but it stands to reason.
Anyway, I just hope the guy stays healthy enough to finish this thing. It really is a masterpiece, and he truly is an incredible writer.

18. After Bush "won" in 2004
Martin posted the quote from Thomas Jefferson about the "reign of witches" on his website. And, another time he mentioned about his obligation to pay taxes and "like a good liberal, I believe taxes are the price we pay for civilization" or something like that.

23. You can tell from his writing that he has a real sympathy for the underdog.
His heroes are all dealing with handicaps or come from one sort of fucked-up situation or another. Contrast this with Republican writers (Dean Koontz, Orson Scott Card, e.g.) whose protagonists tend to be "Mary Sues" who are supernaturally moral or capable and never seem to be in any real peril.

26. I have decided that the series is about how the powerless get and keep power
In GoT, big, wealthy, strong men with swords are the powerful people.

Eddard and Theon are the only POV characters who fit this description.

Jon and Jaime initially fit this description, but Jon's a bastard and Jaime becomes disabled.

Daenerys, Catelyn, Brienne, and Cercei (among others) are women.

Sansa and Arya are girl children.

Tyrion's a dwarf and Bran's a crippled child.

Non-POV characters who are scheming for power include Joffrey, Littlefinger, and Varys.

Each of the characters has to learn how to become his or her own agent.

3. Just today I was reading the part where (spoiler)
Sandor Clegane fought with Baric Dondarrian, and I was concerned that he might be killed.

But I see from the list that clearly that didn't happen (whew! He seems like Tyrion in that he's a good guy trying to make the best of a bad situation)

But why is Gregor still around? Arya's list not getting trimmed sufficiently?

17. Sandor Cleglane is a blackhearted, amoral, cynical villian
whose main redeeming feature is that he is slightly less evil than his brother.

I think he's one of the best characters in the series, and is clearly on a redemptive plot arc, but calling him a good guy is really stretching it.

As for Gregor, Cersei gave him to Qyburn to play with in the dungeons - his current fate is unelaborated, but narrative logic suggests "alive" (or some form of undeath) to me.

24. Sandor Clegane is a savage brute, but he's not really cruel.
That is to say, he doesn't torture, kill, and watch people suffer just for the fun of it. It's always because he's just doing his job or because it serves a useful purpose.

If he were a Dungeons & Dragons character, I'd probably paint his alignment as Neutral Evil--as opposed to Chaotic Evil, which I would classify Joffrey in.

27. Yeah, that was a total asshole move.
But again, it fits with his character. Joffrey the Psychopath ordered him to do it.

It's kind of like how regardless of any cool things Jaime Lannister might do, we really can never forgive him for defenestrating Brandon.

7. Arya is one of my favorite characters. I hope her condition is
temporary. I think Catelyn is already dead/undead.

I really did not enjoy Feast of Crows the way I enjoyed the other books, but that may be because I read them all in rapid succession (I think it took me 3-4 weeks). I didn't enjoy the new set of characters as much, and got tired of the descriptions. But maybe I was just on Martin burn-out. Perhaps if I had waited several years between the last two books, it would have been more like re-visiting an old friend.

Still, I didn't think that the new characters were developed as well; I didn't make good connections with them.

12. I read books 2 and 3 when they came out
and, the long time between books 3 and 4 killed me - I had forgotten so much of what had happened in books 1-3 that I gave up in frustration. I'm going to listen to the audiobooks of 1-3 to refresh my memory and then pick up Feast for Crows & Dance with Dragons once done.

16. Shae? Don't think there are any mysteries about her.
Just a camp follower that caught Tyrion's eye.

As to how she got to where she is, the only minor question is ->that she was in Tywin's bed, despite his well established dislike of whore and his reputation for fidelity to the memory of his dead wife. Even there, there are plenty of satisfactory answers that would be consistent with his characterization.

were a few other details I forgot now. Was in the scene with the drinking game.

11. Weren't Davos & Ser Gregor killed?
I think either Jamie or Cersei will die. Not sure which one.

The Stark to die will be Sansa - I think something big will happen with Bran in the end. And, I think Arya will be around at the end, too.

I think Walder Frey will be the last person left at the end (just kidding)

And, I think Grand Maester Pycelle will finally die.
