my cat normally is what I would call a "proximity cat"
she likes to be near me, but does not usually get right next to me...and never, never wants to be held or will be in my lap.

All three of our cats are more or less this way.

So I have been icing my left foot down after work because I've got a touch of plantar fasciitis.
When I'm sitting in a chair or lying on the couch in the living room, she usually sits behind me or near me on the back of the couch or chair.

But the last few days, she is absolutely cracking me up.

She wants to lay right on top of my ice pack/my foot while I'm trying to ice it.
If I leave the couch and get up to come back, she's laying right on top of the ice pack.
It's so hot outside, I think she's taken to cooling off on my ice.

I know it really is hot outside when she doesn't want to sit in the window. I've seen her sit in the sun on 100 degree days. I guess 110 is even too much for her.

1. it's all about their creature comforts
I think it's funny that your cat is lovin' on the ice. Maybe you should get her her very own ice pack; then the two of you can chill together.

Story time. I have three cats, one of which is very skinny. In the winter she moved to the second floor of the house because it was much warmer there. It's only now, August, that the house has warmed up enough for her tastes and she's moved back downstairs. In fact, she doesn't like the upstairs now because it is air conditioned.

17. She could be Chaucer's twin--even in her choice of sleeping position!
I joke sometimes, "it looks like a cat bomb went off in the living room." He's competing with the laptop for sleeping space currently...

4. Evita is just like that - came from being feral for 3-4 years
but she is adorable and she will grant me about 10 minutes of petting time per day

5. Empathies for the plantar.
The so-far one time it struck me, first of all I didn't know what it was, what was happening. My doctor is a, shall we say, minimalist, has to be pushed to do something. I was in excruciating pain in the mornings, could only get about hopping until it sort of receded after an hour or two but then would come back later. All he said was to get sole inserts.

At a miscellaneous gathering, this unknown who turned out to be a physician's assistant overheard a couple of us whining about this and said, "I know *exactly* what you have, it's plantar faciitis, and if you do what I tell you you'll be fixed up in half an hour!1"

His remedy was to sit and stretch out the leg and hold out a towel in a loop with hands on kitter corners and hook the loop onto the foot and pull back gently, holding the foot with the towel pulled gently taut. Doing this a couple or five minutes at a time then releasing, then repeating a few times within a half hour.

He swore this would fix it up in one of these sessions. Well, maybe I didn't do it totally correct, but about a week of this and the awful thing disappeared completely and I hope FOREVER.

6. what time of the day did you do this???
Edited on Fri Aug-05-11 03:02 PM by MrsBrady
i do hurt in the morning, but i get in the hot shower to help warm up
and then ice down at night to keep the swelling at bay

I'm wearing inserts and a thing around my foot for arch support.
these things are helping, but not getting rid of it. I've seen the doctor.
The massage therapy helped, but I can't afford that every week. :eyes:

7. Honestly, I don't remember. This was 2-3 yrs ago & haven't had it again.
I think the physician's assistant told us (the other person and me) to do it 2 or 3 times per day, and he claimed that it would do the trick, like, FAST, within a couple of days.

As I said, I don't know whether I was doing it correctly, but a week or more later it was totaly gone, and I don't know whether it was because of the "therapy" or just went away on its own.

Web MD has information, plus all the Googling, and there *are* elastic devices that work like the old towel, so there must be something to it.

I don't have solutions, just questions: How long have you had it? Is this the first time or a recurring thing?

Please be careful. Don't pull back with the towel or elastic as hard or as far as it will go. Just gently and naturally and hold it there a couple of minutes at a time. Please look up Web MD and Google.

10. thanks -
my dr, who is a D.O., has training in manipulation. I don't think it's exactly chiropractic, but it's similar.
Anyway, he pushed and pulled and did a bunch of things to my toes, foot and calf. It felt better.

I am better, just not all the way. I also banged my toes and sort of re-injured it yesterday :sigh:

I'm on my feet all day in child care. I'll do the stretching you suggested. I'll ask the doc.

thanks again.

9. Plantars SUX!!!!
It's not-so-affectionately known as the Runner's Nightmare. About 6 years ago, when I was running in the wrong shoes, I got a really bad case on the right heel. I'm sorry to say it took 9 months to finally abate. I'm not flat-footed, but I'm totally knock-kneed and I do over-pronate. Inserts and a video of my running gait helped me to NEVER have that malady again.

Even if you don't run, beware of the wrong shoes. I think they're really the culprit.

11. I'm working in child care
and I think the way I was putting the weight on my feet is the problem.

I was getting down at the kids' level (i'm with 1-2 year olds). but I was staying on the balls of my feet too long, I think.
Plus, bending over picking up toys, etc...

Now I changed to just getting on my knees all the way, sitting on my bottom, or simply standing up.

I have good shoes, but bought better inserts.

and yes, it suxxxxxx! :hi:

15. adorable!
So sweet, all three of them. Good looking and they look so well cared for. I see a little trouble brewin' on the right, though.

Re plantar fasciitis, I had it, too, and very, very bad. The stretching exercises will do it. I did a different type, though. With mine I just, hmm, maybe I can find a pic.

The one on the lower right. Do a few of those each a.m. and you will find it gone and fairly soon, too, I think. The main thing is you have to stop doing what is aggravating it.

I also wear inserts and I have a lot of shoes, which I rotate around. New shoes and new socks all the time make a difference.

Also, I think your assessment of how you got this miserable ailment sounds like it could be right.

One more thing that helped me. My doc told me to freeze water in large orange juice cans and then ice down the arch over the frozen can. That worked really well because it was shaped so it could get right at the inflammation (I have a very high arch).

Cher

p.s. give those kitties and ear scratching for me tonight, will you? :loveya:

Maybe she is trying to love up your sore foot. I had fever and chills this winter and Ralph slept right on top of me all night, keeping me warm. She usually sleeps by me not on me. Kitty is helpin' you heal. Andikes the cool pack.
