Wasps and hornets is it for me. Don't like the way they fly or the way they walk with that stinger held out like a stiletto. Don't like anything about them. Just seeing one gives me chills down my spine. Never been stung by one. Probably because when I see one I go the other direction.
Intimidating little buggers, ain't they?
I notice my dogs don't want anything to do with them either. The will fight over who gets to eat the cicadas or June bugs when they spot one. But they both know the wasps and hornets are bad business. They have each both had a big swollen up nose from when they were younger and didn't know better and got stung sniffing around near one. They haven't forgot that.

Mainly when it's close by and I can't find shelter.
Other than that, I'm good to go.

I'd call it common sense. Lightning should be taken seriously.

unless I am on a big, BIG boat.
Heights, if I am in the open. I can look straight down from the top of a 50 story building and it doesn't faze me. Put me on a ladder with my feet six feet off the ground and I am terrified out of my skull.

I mean in general I can be around things that are electric and even use them. But during electrical storms I have to unplug everything around me. I finally can use electrical products in the bathroom but they have to be unplugged when not in use.

|
Edited on Fri Aug-05-11 05:58 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
I know about the physics part. I can even do the math relating to stuff like inductance and impedance and I can figure out circuits using Ohm's Law. I know the difference between DC power and single phase AC and three-phase AC. I know how voltage regulators and transformers and rectifiers work. But even so, that electricity shit scares me. There are all those electrons scurrying around and you can't fucking see them. So if I do anything electrical in my house, like replace a light fixture, I turn off ALL the electricity in the whole damn house first. That way the electrons can't do something evil like jump out of a wall outlet and get me.

And it's weird. Intellectually, I've got no problem. But my body is scared to death of heights.
I can use my "spidey-sense" as an edge proximity meter.
The closer I get to the edge, the harder my body goes into panic mode. A couple steps closer, my chest tightens up and I get "that feeling." A couple steps back and it all recedes. Strange and interesting.

I have a HUGE respect for the ocean. I've run into a moray eel and jellyfish and do not want to run into either again. I've also been on a catamaran in Hawaii...which scared the hell outta me. I cannot look at Navy ships in any harbor.
I will go into the ocean up to my knees...and that is it. :-)
on edit: AND FLYING IN A PLANE! Which is not right, since my Dad worked for AA for over 40 years and we flew all the time. I need to pop a Xanax and have a drink before I can get on a plane these days. Sorry Dad!

34. Heights and confined spaces. |
|
Actually, it's not so much the heights, but fear of falling. I don't have problems looking out an airplane window, or the window of the observation deck on a tall building. But, forget going up on the roof, over a high bridge, or high up in a tree, or in any high place that isn't enclosed.
I'm also a tad claustrophobic. I hope I never need an MRI or a CAT scan.

39. Wasps and similar stinging things were one of mine for a long time. |
|
I got one (wasp) down my shirt when I was about 8 years old and it stung me several times before anyone could help me.
Over the next ten years I was petrified of any stinging insect and I was stung more times than I care to recount.
Then I decided - enough.
I decided to not be afraid anymore and came to realize that any indoor wasp/bee is terrified. I'm a catch and release/soothing talk type girl now. Haven't been stung since.

especially caterpillars, but maggots and grubs are right up there too
I can levitate and scream loud enough to break glass - don't EVER threaten me with a caterpillar.
mildly phobic of heights too, much worse seeing some other person near a drop-off than even for me to get close, but panicky in both situations.

Terrible fear of heights--I don't like bridges, flying, tall buildings, or glass elevators. I don't like deep water because I can barely swim. Insects scare me, especially stinging insects, grasshoppers, and cicadas. I can't stand tight spaces, crowded rooms, even putting a sheet over my head makes me panic.
But the most terrifying thing in the world is . . . a marionette. The Howdy Doody Show sent me screaming to my bedroom. I can watch marionettes on tv now, but seeing a real one still makes me shudder. Something about the strings and the freaky way it moves. :scared:
