1. They eat people. The first one is just a scout, but if you show weakness - watch out!

Seriously, wiki says they eat plants, decayed organic matter, fungus, pretty much anything. If you provide appropriate habitat in your garden - moist areas, shelter like rocks or logs, and leaf litter or seedlings for them to eat - you'll probably build up a population...
