Who was your favourite made up couple? I liked Diane Chambers and Sam Malone
on "Cheers". Their banter was hilarious. I also like Judy Davis and Sam Neil in "My Brilliant Career". Of course "Pride & Predjudice", any version.

3. But they didn't get together emotionally until the last episode. I was happy
to see them 'go for it' at the end, but it would have been nice if the banter was a little more friendly in the episodes leading up to it.

39. Hawkeye & Kyung Soon (actress Kieu-Chinh), Season 6, Episode 127, "In Love And War"

ONLY complaint with the story is that it is too "time-compressed"...there's no way something like this would play out realistically in a short "one episode" time frame.

But the HONESTY is there...Hawkeye HATES her because he feels she is a silver-spoon type, and when he finds out who she really is, falls in love with her.

The episode showed that for all of his high moral ground, Hawkeye...like 99% of us...was not perfect and not immune from making faulty, rash judgments about others.

Also, it showed that in a time of war, the thing most people are looking for is love. That's war, in a very surface-level, academic sense...the absence of love. Finding love is a means of somehow restoring sanity to an insane situation. The characters "found" each other for a moment in time, but it was not something that could have lasted. It didn't. And as such, it felt real, and I consider it to be one of the best episodes of the entire series.

4. Beren and Lúthien Tinúviel
Don't give me any of that Aragorn and Arwen nonsense.

Let's start with Luthien... along with being the "fairest child of Elves or Men", the daughter of a Maia, and the most accomplished singer of all time, she also loved her man so much as to be willing to knock out her guards and leave home and face down Sauron and beat Sauron's sorry ass just to stand by him. She was willing to go with him straight to Thangorodrim itself, put one over on Morgoth(!), and even after all that still cared for him so much that she was willing to go to Mandos and talk the Valar into bringing Beren back to life. Let's face it: Luthien Tinuviel was one hot thoroughly accomplished scared-o-nothin' clever-as-hell broad.

Now, let's look at Arwen... According to Return of the King appendices A and B, Aragorn first met Arwen and fell in love with her in T.A. 2951 - but Arwen wouldn't even give him the time of day until twenty-nine years later. Her father, Elrond, made it clear that she wasn't gonna marry Aragorn unless he became the Ruler of Gondor and Arnor; and when Aragorn joined the Fellowship and went forth on the hopeless mission to overthrow Sauron, did Arwen help him, as Luthien helped Beren? No! She stayed at home and read magazines until the War was already down to the last gasp, and even then she refused to show up herself but just sent all of Aragorn's friends south to offer all the moral support instead! Oh, sure, once all the dirty work was already done, then she shows up - probably carried all the way there in a sedan chair by some sweating oafish admirers - to finally say, "Ohhhh, Aragorn! Now that you've become the king of several hundred thousand acres of prime real-estate and defeated all of our dire enemies, suddenly you look much more handsome", and in the blink of an eye she's all ready to say the hell with what Dad thinks and marry him. ...Put it all together and what have you got? A cheap, greedy, standoffish gold-digging trollop.

Luthien or Arwen? Come on! Stop kidding around. The "fairest child of Elves or Men" wins hands down. If you're going to give us a contest, at least make it a relatively fair one... like, say, the favorite "who-would-win" contest from last year:

19. Yeah, I have to agree
My first thought went to Eowyn and Faramir because I so like those characters individually and the almost ordinary way they ended up together despite the 'great ones' in their circles.

I think I would like to hang out with them the best but for epic romance and love most pure you have to go with B and L.

26. The Tolkiens' grave marker
In a letter to his son Christopher, dated 11 July 1972, Tolkien requested the below inscription for his wife Edith's grave "for she was (and knew she was) my Lúthien." In a footnote to his letter, Tolkien added "she knew the earliest form of the legend...also the poem eventually printed as Aragorn's song." The name may be derived from the Old English word Lufien, which means love. The Tale of Beren and Lúthien also shares an element with folktales such as the Welsh Culhwch and Olwen and others — namely, the disapproving parent who sets a seemingly impossible task (or tasks) for the suitor, which is then fulfilled. In Tolkien's version the woman actually helps the suitor fulfil his task.

36. David and Maddie
fantastic chemistry. "Atomic Shakespeare" was one of the wittiest, most orginal episodes of any TV show I ever saw, and there was a great one where David goes home to his ex-brother-in-laws funeral (and Maddie follows him) and she finds out the real reason David's wife left him. The writing and acting were incredible (including a fantasy dance sequence).

37. Rob and Laura Petrie were pretty good. Now I like reality, like The Old Man and Chumlee.
Lovely couple. Today's sitcoms just don't compare to stuff like "Cheers," "MASH" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Now get back to work.
