Calling around to local vets to have our Manx neutered
We have a 2 y/o Manx, strictly indoor, healthy - so far, I have one quote starting at $200, that doesn't include ANY meds (her/tech/nurse emphasis). One c/b that tells me a tech will get back to me, but they're running a $35 discount for October. And, did you know, some vets take Diners Club - kinda creepy. I guess it's been a long time since I've had anything neutered.

1. that's really high - do you have a trusted no-kill shelter or other
animal advocacy group you might be able to call for a recommended vet?

2. That's about what the vets charge around here, but the county shelter does it for about 1/2 of that.
I agree with Flaxbee. Look for a public shelter or private rescue. Also, some pet store chains host low-cost clinics in this area -- don't know about Chicago.

3. It's $20 through our county shelter system if you're low income, including shots

tags and microchipping, and $10 on Spay Day (no tags.) Maybe you could find a similar sliding scale or discounted deal in your area if the price is an issue?

4. I checked with a friend who runs a rescue in Chicago and
she says it's about $100 for a neuter at Treehouse Humane Society and about $50 at PAWS. Neither will include pain medication for a neuter.

5. The group near us that does this rather inexpensively is TARA
they spay or neuter a cat for $50.00. It is a traveling vet van. I'm not sure if Petco has anything to do with them, but that is where the TARA van goes I think it's every third Thursday of the month in the Petco parking lot. Might be something to look into.

6. I chatted with my neighbors and I'll be taking him to their vet.
Coincidentally, it's the same office I'd made the appointment at. They've been taking their Scotty and 2 cats there for years and have been happy. I called around and the cost is about average. It'll be nice to have a vet for him again.

Thanks for the replies. :-)
