4. It beat the hell out of the little straws they give out now
I mean WTF are you going to do with a straw other than snort a line with it?

15. Didn't hold that much coke either.
At least not in the mass quantities that was consumed back then in my circle.

5. And to think they still haven't banned Pixy Stix
Giving straws full of white powder to kids. Who thought that one up? The guy who came up with the idea for candy cigarettes?

6. You've clearly never tried to snort pixy stix.

One of the things they add to the sugar to make it taste good, in addition to flavoring powder, is citric acid which makes it tart on the tongue. I made this mistake as a young boy...one time.

Did it register?

Let's put it this way...In my life, I've done more shit than HST and Dr. Leary combined ever imagined in every way you can imagine (To wit: I worked in the NYC film industry.)...but I've never snorted anything since then. Needle drugs are more appealing than the recollection of that. I hate needles.

Imagine a sniffer full of rock salt and lemon juice...that's what it feels like...and it feels like it's going to burn straight into your brain and out your face. That same citric acid is used in aversive therapy to make cocaine undesirable to addicts. I'm not entirely certain that the "real" reason the citric acid is in there isn't to dissuade kids from growing up to be the sort of people who try coke.

14. Ha! I did that once on a dare.
I thought I was the only kid in America dumb enough to try that. Your description is apt.

12. I remember those!
They replaced them with a similar plastic model that was a square little paddle, didn't work nearly as well. But both of them worked a hell of a lot better than those little straws that we're stuck with, these days. I always find undissolved sugar in the bottom of my cup. :(
