ouch...car wreck...wet roads and drivers pulling out in front of you |
|
do not mix. got a first-hand, close-up look at an airbag deployment. that scared me more than the wreck did... mostly good news though. seatbelt on (wear those suckers, PLEASE)...mostly minor bruising...vehicle on the other hand is likely a total loss.
so, PSA...wear your seatbelts...likely just saved me a lot more injury!

5. I've got my fingers crossed on the free part. Is there a silver lining to this? A chance to get |
|
a nicer car or one with better gas mileage, at least?

...this summer I got rear-ended in a chain reaction crash in the rain. I was the third car that got pushed into two in front of me by an SUV. My car was destroyed (but the airbag didn't deploy, which for me was probably a good thing) but everyone else got off with just a few dents and scratches. The driver-at-fault's insurance valued my car so that I put a down payment of about half on a 2010 Chevy Cobalt. God willing, I'm hoping to have it paid off sometime next year. So all things considered, I came out ahead, since I was looking to get a new car in the near future anyway.
Just be prepared for a DA-like grilling from the driver's insurance claims adjuster. They will put you on the defensive if you're not careful. One question that really ticked me off was, did I see the car coming? Well, no, because I was slowing down to a stop at a red light, while keeping my eyes on the traffic ahead of me. And even if I DID see it coming, what was I expected to do about it? Jump lanes and possibly get killed?
ON EDIT: And yes, I wholeheartedly second your endorsement of seat belts.

8. Almost happened to me yesterday, too!... |
|
I made it most of the way home of a long commute. Was thinking I did well under the circumstances. Then, on a stupid side street, a van veers over toward me. Luckily, the people behind us freaked out and slowed down or pulled to the side so that I could do the same. I honked my ass off! The van just sped up into my lane and made a quick right turn and took off.
After I calmed down, I realized they just didn't see me. It was misty/rainy/foggy and my car is small and lower to the ground than the van.
GLAD you are okay! It's very scary.

my right forearm is pretty banged up and where the seatbelt was across my body is pretty black and blue. have been pretty stiff all morning...slow moving...advil-like substance has helped.
still no call from the adjuster...ugh.
