I bought $18 worth of guacamole for yesterday's office Thanksgiving party |
|
I returned home with about $13 worth of it.
Is there something I can do with guacamole that I need to know about?

2. You mean, how to store it? |
|
Wow. ANY party I've been to where there was guacamole, the entire bit of it was consumed!
I'm sorry yours wasn't a hit.
Store it in a tightly closed container, preferably one where the lid sits right on top of the guacamole. If you can't do that, then cover it tightly with saran wrap or some other plastic wrap. Otherwise, the guacamole will discolor.
It's great on crackers, esp. corn chips.

4. Guacamole tostadas, for one thing; |
|
spread on toasted/fried/warmed tortilla, cover w shredded cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, salsa, like tacos. Used to have these for dinner.
Tho might feel redundant, placing avocado pit in container, open or closed, might help preserve.

9. takes a minute to mash an avocado, chop a jalepeno and squeeze a lime |
|
for FRESH, REAL guacamole (which does not need garlic, but you can add it if you want) cost: about a buck

13. And then you'd only have 2 Band-Aids on when you were done. |
|
So your guests could play the exciting game of "Find the Bandage" at your party. :P

15. Avocados are a buck and a half here, if you're lucky. |
|
And, they're dinky, little things. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the Wholly Guacamole, particularly if it's on sale and you have a coupon. I prefer making my own, too. But, Wholly Guacamole, or the Aldi version of it, are acceptable. They have no preservatives or other crap in them., unlike some of the other guacamole brands out there.

6. I've frozen it before. It came out fine when I needed it for a later party |
|
Course, I may have been too drunk at that later party and never did notice if the guacamole was any good... (there wasn't any left though, so maybe it WAS good or it was so bad, somebody chucked it?)

7. Freeze it like the White House chef's |
|
and bring it out every time the first family has a party until they leave the White House?
Or use it as mortar for loose bricks!

10. Miz t.'s advice (My ultimate authority on all things cuisinary) |
|
If you bought it frozen, don't re-freeze. Quote: "I have bought frozen quac when I was too lazy or busy to make it from scratch."
"If you bought it made fresh, and if it has no mayo in it, you can freeze it. Mayo will separate on freezing and make it watery. Best to freeze it in plastic baggies so you can squeeze ALL the air out."
FWIW Give it a shot. You have nothing to lose. Good luck

11. Put it on eggs; add to smoothies; spread on bread/tortillas for sandwiches/tacos; toss with salad. |
|
No use for some good avocado to go to waste.

14. Damn near anything. Snacking is great, but just SPREAD IT ON STUFF! |
|
Hell, I've put it on scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, all kind of stuff. It is ALWAYS good on a sandwich, well, unless there's also horseradish on it. That sort of needs its own space.

16. Yep, It makes a great mayonnaise substitute. |
|
Make some tuna or egg salad with it.
Back in the 1970s, my great aunt made "Mexican" tuna salad, which consisted of tuna, lightly-mashed avocado, taco seasoning, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped or sliced black olives, chopped tomatoes, and lightly crushed Fritos. It was pretty good, believe it or not. You could probably substitute the guacamole for the avocado and taco seasoning. If I were to make it now, I'd add chopped green chiles instead of the taco seasoning.

18. Also keep in mind that avocados, while high in fat, only contain "good" fats. |
|
They aren't going to give you a McBelly. Around here (PA), they can be expensive at times and not always of the best quality. They're usually too ripe or totally NOT ripe. When I find them in the right condition, I usually get a few. We like to make vegetarian sushi (which pretty much means "fermented (vinegar) rice") and avocado slices blend in beautifully with the other vegetables. They also squish into the rice so they don't really take any space when you make the rolls.
