I am watching Rome on dvd, nothing seems to change.
It seemed the slaves of the day were taking away jobs from the free people.

Caesar wanted the Senate to create more jobs, the senior Senator complained about the cost.

I almost posted this in GD but chicken out.

4. Also, they had wars not just for resources, but for keeping the locals from rebelling at home...
Tossing some land and benefits and social status to those who returned from the wars and were willing to do in anyone who opposed the empire. Really, like what we are going through now, they were fighting that horrible, destructive ideal. Equality.

And like us they had bread and circuses, plenty of diversions to keep those stuck in place from going against the order. It's no wonder so many characters in this country adore empire, since a good deal of western civilization was built on the remains of Rome.

The barbarians were actually a good thing although not portrayed nearly as lovingly as Rome has been in the history books and media. Post it in GD. I bet it'll be Hugh!
