1. Looks like self-waterboarding to me
Either that or choking yourself a la Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann.

2. I think they work but are a problem for me.
I know people who swear by them and I've tried them but there's something wrong with my technique. A surprising amount of the water ends up coming out my eye!

6. Burning salt throughout your sinuses, what could go wrong!
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 10:55 PM by JCMach1
:sarcasm:

Have done this actually... was utterly useless...

Take a placebo pill... it will be just as effective and not burn.

8. We get the Ayurvedic stuff here too... I tryed, and even tried
other Ayurveda as well...

There is a reason why Western medicine doesn't use this stuff... It just doesn't work...

If it works for you, god bless...

My experience though has been less than effective...

11. Typically, one goes for a lukewarm isotonic rinse.
I've never experienced any burning or stinging. I must admit the first couple of times it was like drowning, but I don't think it is totally worthless.

I would but it in the same area as applying ice or heat to strained muscle or perhaps taking a cool shower to relieve sunburn.

It doesn't necessarily cure anything, but it does provide some temporary relief.

9. Tried it, hated it, threw it in the trash.
I know people who swear by it. Made me feel like I was about to drown, and then my nose was stuffy for several hours afterward.

10. I use a NeilMed sinus rinse kit.
Edited on Mon Nov-21-11 10:19 AM by Liberal Veteran
I don't use it often. Usually only during allergy season or when I have been doing some work in a area with lots of dirt/dust in the air.

It works pretty good and is a low-positive pressure rinse (as opposed to gravity rinse like a neti pot).

From my own experiences, it isn't a cure-all by any stretch, but can be useful for clearing my sinuses and giving some temporary relief if my sinuses are bothering me.

12. It's really helped me
and my daughter during allergy season.

Being an over 40 male, a lot of decongestants & antihistamines are tough on the prostate, so being able to clear out my sinuses without drugs is great.

And, things like Claritin and Zyrtec never really worked for my daughter's allergies. Benadryl worked, but it also makes you drowsy and only lasts for a short duration. Allegra worked better than Claritin or Zyrtec, but still didn't get the job done. Every night, she'd go to sleep and be congested and you could hear her snoring in the next room. However, once she started doing the neti pot before bed, she slept quietly almost every night.

13. I love it
As long as you don't tilt your head back, there won't be too much liquid going down your throat. I don't use the packages that come with it, thought, just a little sea salt and water. (dries out the snot that doesn't come out.)

14. I was skeptical, but now I'm a believer.
Won't "cure" anything, but provides good, fast and, alas, temporary relief-- about as long as a Benedryl or other cold pill. I like that it's natural and doesn't put all those chemicals and dyes in your body.

Discomfort is similar to getting water up the nose at the pool, and lessens as you get proficient with it. If someone is experiencing "burning" they are either using too much salt or too hot water or both.

18. Hurts like heartbreak, but so very worth it for the results
No, it's no fun at all pouring salt water up your schnozz, but man, the relief you get after is so fantastic that it completely outweighs the massive discomfort of waterboarding yourself.

20. Only do this for allergies
If you have a virus you actually stand a chance of infecting yourself worse by doing this because the nasal passages are the QUICKEST route to infection. You actually WANT to have a runny nose with viral illnesses. Thats how your body sheds infected material.

22. NeilMD
I use the NeilMD thing and actually like the sensation, but find it fairly useless. It helps for a couple minutes. Personally, I don't think water gets in the sinuses at all. The sinus openings are very narrow. Basically it goes in one side of the nasal passages and out the other.

That said, I think the only thing that would actually work for me is driving an icepick into my face and letting the sinuses drain that way.

25. I like it - I have year round allergies
not horrific usually... but constant... Spring - allergies, summer - allergies, fall - allergies, the heat comes on and the dust blows out of the ducts... allergies..

It really helps clear the sinuses and relive pressure.
