I went through soem neighborhoods a couple of nights ago and left some notes on the doors of houses that had Bush signs in front. Theese notes explained how Chimpys foregn and domestic policy is failed and choking the livlyhood of the middle and less fortunete American people. It is my understanding that it is leagal to place a note on a door but it is ileagal to place one in a mailbox. Is this correct ? Needless to say the ss pulled up while i was doing this. They sat me in the back of their cruiser and checked me out. After the check they told me to get lost and don't do it anymore. The check took forever. Do you think there is a chance I am now residing on a goverment list(cia fbi) now because of thsi ?

that you do not tell us where this happened and which sort of police force detained you and whether you were putting notes on doors at 3 am or a more reasonable hour and the contents of the note.......
Who can say?

3. did they ask you to surrender your passport? |

probably on a no-fly list now.
They've let you free but are following you to see what other terrorist links you might have while they prepare your cage at gitmo.

Ha! Good for you, but be careful. I think that what you did is technically legal but you can't use a tape adhesive (should be rubber band) and it's against the law to leave non-postage mail in a mailbox. That's why promos and flyers are usually rubberbanded to your doorknob.

5. I suppose it depends on the execution |

If you painted the notes on the doors with spray paint, then I would consider this illegal. :P
However, all sorts of people leave fliers on my door all the time. Every city council candidate puts a button or magnet on my welcome mat.
I remember there was some sort of Supreme Court case a few years back about a law that required people going door-to-door in one exclusive community to register with the police. The Jehovah's Witnesses were not pleased. I don't remember how it panned out.
Maybe, going around in the daylight knocking on doors and then presenting the note would be more straightforward and less likely to get you mistaken for a prowler.

You can place flyers on doors and on mailbox posts. It is a federal offense to put anything inside a mailbox, so for that reason, I wouldn't touch the box itself.
