AMERICAN RED CROSS (CROSSNET) - WEST AFRICAN FOOD CRISIS
The West African region, which covers Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania, is in the midst of a food crisis that is affecting nearly eight million people. The people in the region are at risk for starvation and malnutrition. The American Red Cross is continuing to coordinate response efforts with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Red Cross Society of Niger. The American Red Cross is able to accept contributions for this crisis. As always, we encourage donors to support the International Response Fund (IRF), however, donor designations specific to this crisis will be honored. Donations can be sent to American Red Cross, 400 Mitchell Lane, Palo Alto, CA 94301. Checks should be made payable to American Red Cross, International Response Fund. You can also further designate to this specific cause by listing West African Food Crisis in the memo line. Please remember that the American Red Cross is not able to accept small, individual donations or collections of items for emergency relief supplies.

If you are interested in supporting this cause by coordinating a fundraising event or campaign for this and/or other International crises, we have donation cans, fundraising envelopes, International Services brochures, and more available for you to use. We can also provide presenters to talk about Red Cross International Services. Just let me know what you need. Thanks for your support!

(Note-This came via Crossnet from my local American Red Cross Chapter -- all American Red Cross Chapters Are Participating).

2. DU's job - not ICRC's job
we need more interest in the POLITICS OF ABSOLUTE POVERTY among the progressives generally at DUAC

ICRC's (ICRC= International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent) grant of authority under the Geneva Conventions is to provide non-discriminatory humanitarian aid. As soon the ICRC takes sides or political action -- those Red Crosses and Red Crescents on the backs of our white windbreakers become Red Bulls' eyes -- targets.
