Seniors Protest Target Stores For Campaign Money (CA)

Aug. 24 (BCN) - Senior citizens and consumer activists held a rally today at the Daly City Target store, announcing a campaign against the Target Corp.

About 25 to 30 protesters gathered outside the store at 133 Serramonte Center in Daly City at about 11 a.m. to picket and distribute literature announcing the campaign, which they are calling "Seniors Beware of Targets on Your Back."

The activist group California Consumers United says Target has contributed "excessive" amounts of money to Gov. Schwarzenegger, who is campaigning against state Proposition 79 and for Prop. 78 in the upcoming special election.

Tim Allison, national chairman of the senior activist group Grey Panthers, described Prop. 79 as requiring prescription drug benefits for seniors, while Prop. 78 would request them voluntarily. A commercial for Prop. 78 claims Prop. 79 would create a costly, ineffective bureaucracy. As the national department store chain expands, said Allison, it will open more pharmacies, the largest market for which is senior citizens. At the same time, he said, the corporation is funding a campaign to reduce seniors' access to prescription drugs. "Target can't have it both ways," Allison said. <snip>
