An independent group of designers and bloggers has created Designs On The White House (www.DesignsOnTheWhiteHouse.org), a contest to design T-shirts for the Kerry Presidential Campaign. Hundreds of creative people from all over the country submitted their designs to an all-star jury, including Moby, Al Franken, Margaret Cho, Janeane Garofalo, Kenneth Cole, Tom Tomorrow, Atrios, and Milton Glaser.
The 10 winning designers span the country – from New York to California, Texas to Minnesota – and include a South African native and former anti-Apartheid activist. The 10 selected designs in eight categories are available for sale on T-shirts, with all proceeds after expenses benefiting the Kerry campaign.
“My aim was to inspire people, to set aside their fears and make a thoughtful decision about the future of this country,” commented one winner, Laura Fisher of Ann Arbor, Mich. “I want a country I can be proud of again, one that values truth and responsibility and real freedom. I believe Kerry can lead us toward that.”
The winners in each category were as follows:
• Best Anti-Bush Shirt: Steven Rosen (“I was the Victim of a Vast Right-wing Conspiracy”), Brooklyn, N.Y.
• Best Get Out the Vote Shirt: Gretchen Blase (“Democracy Is Not a Faith-based Initiative”), Minneapolis, Minn.
• Best Issue Shirt (Domestic): David Rosen (“One Nation Under Surveillance”), Boston, Mass.
• Best Issue Shirt (Foreign): Johnny Hardwick (“9/11 ? Iraq”), Austin, Tex.
• Best Pro-Kerry Shirt (TIE): Laura Fisher (“Vote your hopes, not your fears”), Ann Arbor, Mich.; John Schiff (“Flag”), New York, N.Y.
