Web-roots activists eye swing votes
With California seen as safe for Kerry, Bush critics focus on states in contention.

OAKLAND - Jennifer Kane was brimming with political enthusiasm but had nowhere to express it.
The San Francisco free-lance illustrator wanted to get involved in presidential politics, but the action was not in California, which has been all but written off by political professionals as safely Democratic.
So earlier this year, she signed up with a Seattle-based Web site - www.drivingvotes.org - that organizes road trips around the country for people who want to travel to neighboring battleground states to register voters.
The effort is by no means nonpartisan. The clear aim of the Web site's founders and volunteers is to help defeat President Bush in November, and they are allied with other Web sites and groups that have the same goal.
