PARTY: This Saturday in NYC - DETAILS INSIDE!!!
YES, the first official details have been post for the Saturday night party in NYC!! We've picked a place and here's hoping that DUers both from NYC and visiting NYC for the weekend will join us in a night of drinks & great conversation!!!

Details:

Who: All DUers who are somewhere in the NYC area are welcomed
What: Offical "Go Away RNC" party
Where: Rocky O'Sullivans - 129 Lexington Avenue (Between 28th & 29th)
When: Saturday, August 28th at 7:30pm
Why: Because we are DUers and WE RULE!!!!!

NOTE: There is no food served at Rocky O'Sullivans but we are allowed to bring our own munchies along. So the evening's party is BYOM (Bring your own munchies): Chips, Pretzels, Salsa, whatever you think you and the rest of the group would want to much on.

After we're done at Rocky's - some of us are going to Marie Crisis for a night of Karoke Show Tunes (that's what was explained to me by PagerBear). NO Estimated Time of Arrival, but if anyone expects me to sing Show Tunes - we need to get some beverages in me first.

I hope to see you all there. I'm not familiar with the bar, but when we get there we'll tell the bartender that we're the DU group and where to send those that show up.

Hope to see you all there!!!

2. Just ask where the DUers are
I'll notify the bartenders that folks will be looking for our group. I don't think it's that big of a bar so you should be fine!!!

3. The place is the size and shape of a long living room...
one rectangular box. You're either next to the bar or in the back near the stage. I recommend the back; there are stools, benches, a few chairs and a couple of tables. You can also sit on the stage if no one is performing. I'll ask tomorrow night what size crowd they can handle. At least we know they like liberals there.

4. That's why I picked the place
I saw the "Air America" logo on their website and KNEW it was the perfect place for us to meet.

:D

6. BTW - it's Rock Sullivan's and here's more details about the bar:
http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7121813
All things Irish are revered at this friendly watering hole.

The Scene
Many establishments claim to be authentic Irish pubs, but how many hold Irish classes two nights a week, host readings by Irish authors Frank McCourt and Edna O'Brien and boast the city's longest-running quiz night? Just one: Rocky Sullivan's, named after James Cagney's character in "Angels With Dirty Faces." Former Irish Voice editor Patrick Farrelly and Chris Byrne opened the bar back in 1996 with an Irish nationalist bent. Now Brits drink Guinness alongside the regulars, which include a large number of New York's finest and bravest.

The Draw
The wood-paneled walls are adorned with pictures of the Kennedys and Shane MacGowan from the Pogues, along with various Irish knickknacks. A tiny stage in back hosts a variety of bands on the weekends, and in between sets the eclectically stocked jukebox plays everything from Big Pun to New Order, Tom Jones to the Beach Boys.

best real irish pub - ROCKY SULLIVAN'S

Surrounded by scads of EPCOT-Ireland "pubs" populated by suits and mooks with tweed hats and leprechaun tats, ROCKY SULLIVAN'S is the real deal. The grubby underground hole has real Irish music on the box and tiny stage, real Irish authors at its superb Wednesday night readings series, and real Irish language classes in the back room. The "Unrepentant Fenian Bastard" T-shirts may be a bit too Irish, but the properly poured Guinness is perfect. -Michael Malone

Opened in 1996 by Black 47's Chris Byrne and journalist Patrick Farrelly, this feel-good Irish pub offers friendly folks, fine Guinness and plenty of events to keep things from getting bland. Singer-songwriter Mary Courtney performs every Sunday night at 6PM, and Seanchi & The Unity Squad dish out rebellious, Celtic-flavored hip-hop at 11PM every Friday. In addition to the popular Wednesday night reading series (8PM), which prompts visits from celebrated authors, intellectual types can form a team and put their knowledge to the test at Rocky's Thursday night Pub Quiz (9PM). Oh, and Irish language classes are held in the back lounge on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7PM. If you still can't find anything to suit you, just relax and enjoy the cozy environs. -- Michelle Pepe (Photo: Noah Kalina)

7. Enki23 and I will be there.
We're flying up from Baton Rouge and will be staying with a legal observer in Queens. We're also planning to go to the march over the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday.

10. Getting There
The bar is close to the 28th Street stop on the Lexington Local or Number 6 line. The E and V lines from Queens connect to the 6 at the first stop in Manhattan, which is Lexington Avenue. Take the downtown 6. The number for MTA Information is 718-330-1234. So far, all of the transit advisories affect only destinations on Fifth Avenue and further West. I hope to see y'all there.

19. Which part of Queens?
There's an excellent bar in Astoria called the Czech National Home (or something like that). Big outdoor beer garden and lots of greasy central European bar food.

20. They're doing a live (or semi-live) broadcast of satire for sanity
which means the place will already be packed. There are literally thousands of other places we could meet. I can suggest some if you like.

that they're running tapes from previous appearances. There was no indication at Rocky's that anything was happening on Saturday. Barry said they'd be live Monday through Thursday. We can meet and either see the show (if there is one)or go somewhere else.
