Seven agree to take part in Des Moines Register's debate
Seven of the nine Democratic candidates for the 2004 presidential nomination plan to participate in The Des Moines Register's debate, scheduled for Jan. 4 at 2 p.m.

Candidates who have accepted the newspaper's invitation to participate are former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.

The debate is considered a milestone in the final push toward the Iowa caucuses, which launch the presidential nominating season Jan. 19.

"The debate should be an important measuring stick for Iowans and voters around the country," Register Editor Paul Anger said. "We have a wealth of good questions submitted by readers, and we're looking forward to the answers."

3. Clark's not campaigning in Iowa.
Since he's got the south locked up, and all.
