Three months ago, a statewide poll showed a jumbled presidential landscape in Wisconsin, with "undecided" leading a dense Democratic pack.
Today that landscape looks quite different, as former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has not only surged but has also begun to distance himself from the field, according to a new poll of likely Democratic primary voters in the state.
"It's consistent with everything we're seeing nationally," said University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist Ken Goldstein, who conducted the poll Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. "Dean is very strong everywhere, and Dean is very strong in Wisconsin."
Dean captured the support of 33% of those polled, well ahead of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (12%), retired Gen. Wesley Clark (11%), Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt (9%) and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (6%). Another 22% were undecided.
