eyesroll's husband is running against Jim Sensenbrener (R-WI).

This thread is for looking up bad stuff on Sensenbrenner and finding precincts in the district to concentrate on.

1. Thanks muchly, Goobergunch!
Since my mom told me I have to say something nice before I say something not-so-nice, I will say that F. James has a 100% rating from the Humane Society. F. James is nice to animals.

That said, let's proceed with the opposition research....I've already got his vote-smart dossier, but I can use all of the help I can get!

Thanks DU!

4. Bush carried the district 61.6/34.9
it appears to be mainly the Milwaukee suburbs, which if anything like the Twin Cities outer suburbs are solidly hardcore GOP.

7. They are pretty conservative, BB...
The Jefferson County part of the district voted for Gore; everyone else voted for Bush.
Some interesting things are happening, though -- the North Shore in Milwaukee County is starting to shift a little left. We also have West Allis, which is a working-class suburb that is sort of in the middle.

The city of Waukesha, where we live, has an OK split, but surrounding areas are hardcore GOP.

It will be uphill.

(BTW -- Is your stat for the CURRENT 5th district? WI-5 was different in 2000 -- and Sensenbrenner was in WI-9 then. Either way, yes, it's Bush Country, but a lot of people are getting angrier.)

If public backlash against Bush becomes fairly severe by 2004, votes for your husband could be ripe for the picking.

I know that I'm all the way on the other side of the state, but I'd like to help Vince out in any way I can from Eau Claire.

The district, being as rural as it is, votes for anything with an "R" after its name. However, Sensenbrenner voted to cut vet's benefits by $25 billion.

12. WI-5 notes
In 2002, Sensenbrenner did the worst in Jefferson County, winning there by only 58%-42%. However, there was no Democrat running in WI-5, making analysis of the returns difficult. So here's the returns for the same counties in the governor's race:

Jefferson County: McCallum, 45%-37%-16%
Milwaukee County: Doyle, 56%-36%-6%
Ozaukee County: McCallum, 61%-32%-6%
Washington County: McCallum, 62%-28%-9%
Waukesha County: McCallum, 63%-30%-6%

The bad news is that only Ozaukee and Washington Counties are fully included in the district. I'd be curious to see the precinct-level breakdown...I'd suspect that there are probably a few Democratic precincts in the Milwaukee portion of the district.

14. Anti-Civil Rights and Total BFEE
Have you seen this bit about Wisconsin’s super-sized hypocrite and gasbag?

Resign & Repent!

Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI-9) argued passionately before the Senate that President Clinton should be impeached for violating the civil rights of Paula Jones in her sexual harassment lawsuit. But Sensenbrenner consistently opposed all civil rights laws, and even called for the abolition of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Specifically, he opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1991 which outlawed sexual harassment. According to the Chicago Tribune, Sensenbrenner admitted that "I voted against it, but it's the law." Sensenbrenner lied to the Senate when he argued that Paula Jones had been refused merit raises and fired from her job because she rebuffed Clinton; Jones has testified that she received her raises and left voluntarily to move to California.

Resign & Repent, Sinner!

BTW: The Turd Sensenbrenner is tied to John Singlaub of Iran-Contra and possible SE Asia drug-running fame, as well as sundry rich right wingers. This guy’s a toad of the Secret Team, as seen in this cursory namebase diagram.

Good luck in 2004! Take good care! Go get ‘em!!!

15. Sansbrainer Anti-Environment, too.
Before Smirk, there was Senselessbrainer working diligently to protect the world's power companies:

Congressional Republicans Aim to Stop Kyoto

In a speech to utility executives at the Edison Electric Institute CEO meeting Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-Wisc.) said that the Kyoto Protocol is "fatally flawed." Citing a study by Charles River Associates, Sensenbrenner pointed out that compliance with the treaty would cost the U.S. $230 million and 3 million jobs in 2030.

He also discussed the tradition of withholding international treaties from the Senate. Past presidents have withheld treaties from Senate ratification for long periods of time. The 1949 Genocide Treaty, for example, was not sent to the Senate for ratification until 1989. Sensenbrenner said that the Senate may hold up something that Clinton really wants, such as nuclear disarmament, to force submission of the Kyoto Protocol.

Another fear is that the Clinton Administration may try to implement the protocol using existing authorities under the Clean Air Act. Sensenbrenner foresees a constitutional confrontation in the event of such attempts by the administration.

SNIP…

Sensenbrenner also told the executives that educating the American public about the costs of implementing the protocol was key to its defeat. "If we tell the people how much it’s going to cost . . . the American people will be outraged," he said (BNA Daily Environment Report, March 27, 1998).

Also in a dear colleague letter Rep. Sensenbrenner and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), ranking Democrat on the House Commerce Committee called on President Clinton to scrap the Kyoto Protocol in light of the "arrogance" displayed in remarks (reported in our last issue) made by Raul Estrada-Oyuela, chair of the Kyoto conference. Estrada criticized the U.S. Congress suggesting that "perhaps they should get in touch with the rest of the world" (Greenwire, March 23, 1998).

http://www.cei.org/gencon/014%2C02872.cfm

Don't people know this guy is a dirty turd? Don't the people in his district WANT clean air and a safe environment for their kids and grandkids? Haven't they seen Bill Moyers and all those chemicals we now carry around that are affecting childhood and adult health? Here's more on Sinsemillabrainer:

Sensenbrenner: EPA Settlement with NRDC Looks Too Much Like Kyoto Treaty Implementation

Powerful House science committee chair urges agency to reject "inappropriate and improper" agreement

In a further escalation of tensions between Congress and the White House over global warming policy, House Science Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisconsin) has voiced strong objections to a proposed consent agreement he says represents an attempt by the Clinton administration to implement the Kyoto Protocol prior to Senate ratification.

Sensenbrenner's ire is directed at a proposed consent agreement intended to settle a lawsuit brought in 1992 against EPA by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The suit alleges that EPA failed to list, and to determine whether to regulate, hazardous air pollutant emissions from electric utility steam-generating units, as required by section 112 of the Clean Air Act (CAA).

Under the proposed settlement, EPA agrees to "undertake and publish on the results of an analysis of the emissions reductions of SO2, NOx, CO2, and mercury (and the effect of mercury removal costs) that would be achieved through an array of strategies to control SO2, NOx, CO2, and mercury."

That requirement, Sensenbrenner wrote in a June 25 letter to EPA Administrator Carol Browner, contradicts repeated assurances from Clinton administration officials that the administration would not "undertake actions to implement the Kyoto Protocol before it is ratified and entered into force."

21. Congressman's Trip Questioned
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 10:21 PM by rads
The recording industry paid $18,000 for the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee to travel to Asia to urge government officials to clamp down on pirating of music and movies. Watchdog groups say the trip may have violated House ethics rules.
...
Gary Ruskin, who runs the government watchdog group Congressional Accountability Project, said the trip may have violated a House rule that bars members and staff from accepting expenses "from a private source for travel the primary purpose of which is to conduct official business."
...
"The impression that the trip gives is that our intellectual property policy is for hire when the recording industry pays for the chairman of the Judiciary Committee to level threats at these governments," Ruskin said. "It creates an appearance of influence-peddling."

23. One area that isnt republican
I'm from the most southern suburb in Sensenbrenner's district, Shorewood. It is small in size (about 1 square mile), but has 17,000 people in it. It is overwhelmingly democratic. I would guess there are 8 or 9 dems to every republican in my school. Getting out the vote here would help anyone running against Sensenbrenner.

39. Hi WisDem421
BTW - nice to see some Shorewood dems here, but just a quick correction - Shorewood is the mot eastern suburb in his district - city of Waukesha and other Waukesha County cities/villages are futher south than Shorewood.

I live in Menomonee Falls - this may be a suburb to start to campaign in - some areas may not be as strong repuke as most other areas of Waukesha county.

and yes, I will NOT vote for Sensenbrenner!

I think last time he ran unopposed so it would be good to see a Dem try to unseat him!

Though not nearly as much as shorewood, Glendale leans slightly to the left also. Mequon's growing Jewish population is making it lean more left than it used to be.
