Anyone representated by Roscoe Bartlett (R)

It appears that he will be my congressman when I move to Hagerstown, Maryland next year.

What is this guy's deal? Is he beatable? Is he a far-rightist?

What should I know about this guy? My last two congressmen in Virginia were horrific so I don't know how much worse it could get, but I am sick of being represented by these Conservative freaks.

2. A total dimwit
Perhaps his most famous moment came in the early days of the Enron Appointistration..." I don't want the President to look dumb," said Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD), but " I want you to explain to me how cutting the energy budget when facing a potential energy crisis isn't dumb?"

http://www.aip.org/enews/fyi/2001/085.html

The idiot has also flirted with a tax fraud lunatic named Bob Schulz, and at one point scheduled hearings so Schulz could air his crackpot views in Congress!!

3. So he said

Bush was looking dumb?

I just looked up the votes and in the last 3 elections Roscoe got over 60% of the votes each time. It appears he is in the congress for life.

Freaking great. I guess my only chance to be represented by a Democrat is to move to San Francisco. :hippie:

4. Even he could see it...
Although he hoped Abraham could come up with some bullshit so Chimpy didn't look as dumb as he was...

60% is not so bad...start working to get him out of there....and do what I'm doing to my idiot, Scott Garrett. I've been posting frequent e-mails calling for impeachment.

5. no, 60% is too much
I can't think of anyone with 60% who's been beat or considered vulnerable without redistricting. The district is solidly Republican, and was made moreso by the Democrats gerrymandering, they added more Republican parts of it to make Morella and Elrich's seats more Democratic, they picked up both so I guess it was worth it but now the two Republican districts in Maryland are secure.

7. Just lovely

Hey...at least now when I mail my congressman I'll get the same middle finger in Maryland that I got in Virginia.

8. No the seat isn't winnable
Edited on Fri Sep-19-03 12:53 PM by jiacinto
MD-6 spans the western panhandle of the state. A map of it appears here:

In redistricting MD Democrats basically pushed the four Republicans into two GOP seats. In the Baltimore and the DC suburbs they put all the Republican precincts into the 1st and into the 6th districts. To get rid of Connie Morella they gave some of the more softer Democratic and the stronger Republican precincts in Montgomery County to the 6th and the 4th districts.

These counties are all heavily Republican. Redistricting pushed all the Republican precincts in the DC and Baltimore subursbs into this seat. The major populations centers in this district--Frederick, Carroll, and Harford Counties--are all solidly Republican. They are exurbs of Baltimore in DC fiilling up with "white flight" from the DC and the Baltimore suburbs. Ehlirch (R) racked up overwhelming margins here against KKT in the 2002 Governor's race. In Carroll County he almost won 80% of the vote there, which provided him with crucial votes to defeat her.

Beverly Byron (D) represented this district in the 1970s and the 1980s before losing a primary challenge in 1992. Since then the seat has been with the Republicans and probably will remain so for the forseeable future.

In the 2000 presidential race the seat supported Bush overwhelmingly. Against Gore the Republican, Bush, won 61% of the vote.

9. Thanks jiacinto

It's comforting to know I will be living amongst the freepers. Hey, its all good...I can handle it, because I feel good about my views.

Sometimes its just a little more pleasant to be talking w/ your own kind, people who think like you. I guess that's why I work for a non-profit organization.

It sure as hell isn't for the money. :hurts:

10. oh and to answer your second question
is a far rightist? well sad to say: yes. he's a gun nut who's probably to the right of the NRA, and one of the John Birch types who wants to get the US out of the UN, and has cosponsored bills to do so in the past. Not exactly what you wanted to hear I guess, but the truth.

He does oppose ANWR drilling though. I don't know why, but that's probably the only good thing about him.

12. Oh lord

Yea, opposing ANWR drilling is bizarre. Hey thats a good thing, because neither of the two congressworms I had in Va opposed it.

At least I have 2 Democratic Senators (Mukulski and Sarbanes...their OK, not my faves, but better than freaking Allen)...But I have that Erhlich as Gov...YUK

13. Jennifer Dougherty (D)

Mayor of Frederick? I'd like to see her make a run. I figured Frederick would be more Conservative than Hagerstown...I guess Roscoe P. Coltraine pulls all his votes from the rural areas where they think "shootin' turkeys" is a constituional right.

Otherwise, Im voting for Dougherty.

11. republican primary in 2004
http://www.politics1.com/md.htm

Roscoe Bartlett (R)* - (Campaign Site)
Larry Haines (R) - State Sen. & Realtor
Alex Mooney (R) - State Sen. & Ex-Congressional Aide
Scott Rolle (R) - Frederick County State's Attorney
Jennifer Dougherty (D) - Frederick Mayor & Businesswoman
Sue Hecht (D) - Ex-State Del., Ex-Women's Shelter Director & '02 State Sen. Nominee

I read an article online about the primary but I can't find it anywhere. The other republicans look even worse than Bartlett though.

14. Roscoe went Bible-thumping to a Cumberland Jewish group.
I heard about that one when I lived in Cumberland for a short period in 1994.

Yeah, he's far-right, and he's not beatable. The good news is his district pulls in so many conservative voters that it frees up other districts (like 2 and 8) to give Maryland safe dem seats in the suburbs.

17. I can top that . . .
Bartlett invited himself to speak at the funeral of a good friend of mine who was tragically killed in a car accident along with his three children. He didn't know my friend but everyone thought it was a nice gesture for him to offer his condolences to the family. He proceeded to speak for about a half hour about the most bizarre stuff that made absolutely no sense - something about the planets and the stars and astronomy and how they proved the existence of God or some such. It was weird, but it actually provided some levity to the service since everyone in the congregation was so befuddled and amused by his totally incomprehensible remarks that they had to stifle their laughter. And you know there's nothing funnier than a bunch of people trying not to laugh, especially when the source of their amusement doesn't have a clue that he's becoming a laugh riot. Even the pastor almost lost it. Finally, the organist began playing - which should have been a clear signal to Bartlett that it was time to sit down. But no, he said, "wait, wait, I'm not finished," and continued on. It was so God-awful funny, people still talk about it.

21. Yeah
His seat takes in the fast growing exurbs of Frederick, Carroll, and Harford Counties. And they are extremely Republican. Ehrlich swept all three of those countries with crushing margins. I do fear, though, that if the GOP ever gets control of the state house or part of the redistricting process, that they will create a House seat centered around those three counties.

Why do that and miss all the fun Ill have with the Repukes.

We looked all over the place...Eastern Maryland-I think-was too expensive for us for what we wanted (I do work for a non-profit now)....we looked everywhere and found a really decent house in Maryland, brick with a basement with plenty of Radon. :nuke:
