Arianna Huffington in recall race?

Add another name to the growing list of potential candidates in the increasingly likely gubernatorial recall election: Arianna Huffington.

Activists in the Bay Area and Los Angeles are abuzz with the idea that the columnist, commentator and author -- a former Republican turned darling of the progressive left -- could be a contender. A meeting on the topic was held last weekend at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in San Francisco.

"It went really well. We had about a dozen folks turn out, we've all got good grassroots connections and we're all really excited," said Baker Center executive director Van Jones, adding a www.runariannarun.com Web site could be launched sometime this coming week.

Huffington was the topic of a fawning article last Monday on AlterNet.org, a popular San Francisco-based progressive online magazine. "Articulate, funny and self-deprecating -- she jokingly refers to her previous political life as her 'Republican interregnum' -- she is also an effective organizer and mobilizer," AlterNet executive director Don Hazen wrote.

Many Californians might remember her as the ex-wife of oil and banking heir Michael Huffington, a one-term Republican Congressman from Santa Barbara who spent a then-record $30 million on his unsuccessful 1994 U.S. Senate bid. They reportedly met at a party in oil mogul J. Paul Getty's San Francisco mansion in 1985, married in 1986 and divorced in 1997.

But many now know her as a nationally syndicated columnist who has appeared on most of the major television talk shows, and who co-hosts a weekly Santa-Monica based radio talk show carried on stations across the nation.

She's the author of 2000's "How to Overthrow the Government" and this year's "Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed is Undermining America," praised by figures ranging from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., from journalist Bill Moyers to "West Wing" impresario Aaron Sorkin.

Though I'd much rather see Mayor Willie Brown or Sen. Dianne Feinstein in the race, Arianna would be a great candidate. She'd certainly be able to attract headlines.
