Sacramento Bee : Bustamante is being asked to consider giving up race
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 04:44 PM by DoubleDigitIQ
Excerpt from complete article:

Sensing that their last hope of holding onto the governor's office may lie in getting Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante out of the race, some prominent Democrats have called him to discuss whether he is willing to drop out.

Bustamante, a Democrat whose campaign asks voters to "vote no on the recall and yes on Bustamante," gave no sign Thursday that he had such plans, appearing at a Los Angeles debate and continuing his spate of TV commercials.

And his chief campaign strategist, Richie Ross, flatly rejected the notion that Bustamante would drop out, terming the idea "ridiculous."

Ross said former President Clinton will soon cut a radio ad and a message for an automated system that calls potential voters for the lieutenant governor.

"I just don't know on what basis any of this comes," he said. "It's just remarkable to me."

But Democratic donors and others confirmed they had discussions with Bustamante this week about whether he could improve the chances of Democratic Gov. Gray Davis staying in office if he stepped aside.

2. dumb idea, imho
Cruz running gives dems 2 chances to win. if Cruz dropped out, we'd only have one chance.

and it's too late for dropping out to do much "good" anyway. lots of people have already voted absentee. *i* already voted for Cruz (and against the recall). lots more people wouldn't get the word about a last-minute dropout.

3. How many do you think might vote Recall Si - Bustamante Si?

I saw a lady holding up that sign when I was driving from work the other day. Almost slammed on the brakes in the middle of the road to go smack her and then said "no - just keep driving". I couldn't believe it. I hope to heavens there aren't many like her!

4. If anyone should drop out is Davis
There is a whiff of racism in the air! Why should Latinos have to sit in the back of the bus, particularly when they are more qualified that the bus driver!
