Dems should label/sell "middle class tax cut with offsets paid by rich"
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 01:19 PM by papau
The 10% bracket, the child care credits increased a bit, the marriage penality replaced by file under either status rules, with every dime of tax cut on the over 200,000 income folks returned to Clinton level, with new tax bracket for over $1 million in income, and with Alt Min ending any preference for investment - capital gains and investment interest and dividends taxed at 100 cents on the dollar - but only at 25% top tax rate.

The label makes a difference.

The GOP will scream class warfare - but we counter, pointing out how most benefits go to high income/asset folks and their corporations, plus we note how much richer the rich have become at the expense of the rest of us - meaning the rest of us are losing the class warfare the rich are waging, via the GOP, on us, and on our children via the birth tax that covers the National Debt - the Bush increase in the NATIONAL DEBT via the deficits being a new debt our kids will have to pay both via the interest year to yeat plus the principal when that comes due.

1. You're not going to fool people with misleading labels.

People understand that if their taxes go up, it's a tax-hike, not a tax-cut.

I'm not sure I understand your first sentence where you talk about the 10% bracket and the child care credits... what are you saying we should do with them?

As for the class-warfare label, I think it is a mistake for us to be scared of that charge. We are the champions of the middle-class and working-class Americans, Republicans are the champions of the upper-class. It's nothing for us to be ashamed of...

middle class.

It also includes increasing the fairness of the tax system by taxing the rich more - we just chose not to focus attention on that part via a label. Seems to be standard GOP and US Media approach to taxes.

2. If Dean gets elected, the middle class is toast
Not only will he roll back the middle class tax cuts, he wants to hit the middle class with a payroll tax. I guess Mr. Park Avenue feels the middle class can afford it best.

4. That is a flat out false hood
and not only that Kucinich, your candidate, wants to do the exact same thing with payroll taxes. Both of our candidates wish to eliminate the current 85,000 cutoff for payroll taxes. Do you ever, and I mean ever, bother to research any post you make?

5. Did YOU hit the FICA cap this year? I did, and I'm willing to give up the
money I save at the end of every year to support our economy, so I represent ONE member of the "middle class" that doesn't feel like they'll be "toast".

6. Progressive Tax Policy
Just tell the damn truth. The wealthy have always paid more in times or war and economic downturns. We've always used federal tax dollars to invest in infrastructure and new technologies which paves the way for economic growth. The Democrats just need to come out and tell the truth about economics, taxes and American traditions. It's NOT the rich we need to convince, they know the truth already. It's the poor low-income worker who is eating up this class-warfare bullshit.
