New Kucinich endorsements from Zinn, Glover, Garvey, Fr. Burgeois, others
This is from the Kucinich campaign, today. LOTS of good news, and GREAT endorsements! :toast:

Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign has just received endorsements from a number of prominent Americans, including actor and activist Danny Glover, author Howard Zinn, Democratic leader and former Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate and former head of the NFL players' union Ed Garvey, Founder of the School of the America's Watch Father Roy Bourgeois, Co-Founder of Global Exchange Kevin Danaher, the American Vegetarians, and Comedian Professor Irwin Corey.

The Kucinich campaign has also just been endorsed in the first primary
state, New Hampshire, by the New Hampshire Green Party, and has also
received the endorsement of the Kent County, Mich., Greens.

Danny Glover said: "I have watched Dennis Kucinich not only in the glory of a political campaign, but I have sat and dialogued with him and watched him learn from others, and of all the candidates he stands the closest to my conscience, and I must go with my conscience."

Howard Zinn, author of "A People's History of the United States", said: "I am happy to endorse Dennis Kucinich because of all the candidates for the Democratic nomination, he is the only one with a bold, clear, principled position against the war in Iraq, against U.S. militarism, in favor of the single payer health system, in favor of using the great wealth of our country to solve the needs of the American people."

Ed Garvey published this column today in "Capital Times"

Father Roy Bourgeois said he was backing Kucinich because he has spoken up so strongly in support of closing the School of the Americas.

:toast: These are some mighty fine endorsements, and on the school of the Americas, DK has spoken about that too!, I had no idea, wow. Danny Glover is a fine actor, glad to have a great man like him associated with Kucinich. Ive never heard of Ed Garvey but thats cool too and on Howard Zinn I am thrilled, I loved Peoples history of the US. I am glad Howard sees Kucinich in a great light. We can do this thing.

You should learn more about Ed Garvey!!! Garvey is the former executive director of the NFL players union. He ran for governor in Wisconsin in 1998 against Tommy Thompson. He currently serves as Editor and Publisher of fightingbob.com, named for famed progressive and presidential candidate Robert "Fighting Bob" La Follette.
http://www.fightingbob.com/

If you have never heard of La Follette you should complain to your US history teacher. Here is link to excellent piece about La Follette that John Nichols wrote a few years back.
http://www.fightingbob.com/aboutbob.cfm

WHAT is it about La Follette that has made him such an enduring figure? It comes down to a single idea: America, La Follette argued throughout his political life, cannot live up to its ideals so long as militarism and corporate power warp our democracy.

14. It's a GREAT way to start the week
We in the DK camp really needed this. I was hoping Zinn might come down this way, since Chomsky is not in the endorsing candidates game.

There's still a lot of work to do, but this makes doing it that much easier. Thanks for the congrats-- we appreciate it!

howard zinn for dennis kucinich, that makes me smile ear to
ear and gives my battery a good jolt. the other endorsements
are great too. i did hear chomsky in a book tv (c-span)
interview a few months ago. he was asked if he liked any of
the dem. canidate's. he responded by saying he likes
kucinich's platform. short of an endoresment but it made me
smile just like when i read zinn on this post.

9. not sure if they are politically active
Glover has been an activist for a while. I tell you I am happy about Glover, but I am really pleased about Zinn whose book is so great and amazing, the priest because I like the mission he has and pleased to know DK is on the same, Garvey who seems like a great guy who does much.

7. Here is in full Ed Garvey's endorsement of DK
http://www.madison.com/captimes/opinion/column/guest/59911.php

It's a good one to get. Being from Wisconsin I have great admiration for Ed Garvey who ran against Tommy Thompson for Governor in 1998 and ran a truly great progressive campaign that I was proud to volunteer for. He did the best of any opponent to run against Thompson in the three re-election runs he had, garnering 40% of the vote and convincingly winning the city of Madison.

13. Wow, that's cool!
I'm from MN myself, and Tommy Thompson was one of the few govs who could make even Jesse Ventura look good by comparison. One of my favorite scenes in Michael Moore's "The Big One" is when he takes the welfare moms into the state house to protest WI's "welfare reform" program.

Although "Bowling..." was much bigger, I still really like "The Big One". Probably because it has Cheap Trick in it! (the best midwest R-n-R band there ever was, with the exception of the Femmes, Replacements and/or Hüsker Dü IMHO)

11. I mean this seriously though it might sound like a loaded question...
Have many women's groups or prominent women endorsed Kucinich? I'm curious how the choice/abortion issue is playing out. And I swear I mean that, and am not asking a loaded question.

And I'm not trying to start a debate on that issue, I'm just interested in his endorsements. I was one of the first (actually the first I saw) here at DU to put "Kucinich for President" in my sig line after his Prayer for America, and had it linked to my web page for a while, so I'm not a basher, though I'm undecided now. I just haven't followed him lately.

FEMINISTS FOR KUCINICH

We are feminists who consider the Bush administration a danger to our country and the world, and see a regime change in 2004 as the highest political priority. Rather than waiting to hear what all the Democratic candidates have to say, then jumping on the bandwagon of the least offensive, we decided to make our own list of priorities and see who agrees with us. Here's our list:

1. We want a candidate who will stop the war on the poor. Though an estimated 20 -29 percent of Americans live in poverty, the Republicans’ new tax code penalizes the poor and rewards the rich. Women on welfare are forced into low-paid jobs, even in the absence of childcare. Food pantries can no longer meet the demand of the millions of the poor, both employed and unemployed. When anyone mentions these facts, the Republicans accuse them of inciting a "class war," but they are the ones who have started this war, whose victims are disproportionately women, children and people of color.

2. We want a candidate who stands for peace, respects international treaties and institutions such as the U.N. and the International Criminal Court, and tries to resolve problems through negotiation. We are horrified by the fact that our country started a war for no clear reason, on the basis of lies and distortions, in defiance of international law and world opinion, and without concern for the lives that would be lost. Far from protecting us from terrorism, such military adventures can only increase our vulnerability and feed the rage and ranks of those who seek to harm us.

3. We want a candidate who will defend the separation of church and state, and the individual rights guaranteed us by the Constitution. The Bush administration has instituted detention without trial; secret military tribunals; and hugely increased government surveillance of our citizens.

4. We want a candidate who opposes discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and who stands for women's reproductive rights and recognizes that these rights depend on universal health insurance. The right to choose means women are entitled to abortion, if that is their choice, and to all the social supports necessary to raise children, if that is their choice. The Bush administration is seeking to appoint judges who will undermine these rights.

5. We want a candidate who will address questions of global economic imbalance and stand up for the rights of immigrants. International financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, led by the U.S., have imposed “structural adjustment” policies that relentlessly increase the gulf between rich and poor countries -- driving many of the world's poor to come here, legally or illegally. We call for an end to the harassment of undocumented workers by the INS and the political persecution of immigrants of color--the round-ups and detentions. We are a "nation of immigrants" and should embrace this heritage.

6. We want a candidate who will challenge racism domestically and internationally; who understands that affirmative action is still needed and that our schools have been re-segregated; and who will take a stand against the Republican Party’s use of stereotypes to spread division and fear, from Reagan's "welfare queens" to today's demonized version of Islam.

Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate who not only agrees with all these points but has developed policies to support them: starting a cabinet-level Department of Peace; supporting unions and the right to organize; cutting the bloated military budget; restoring environmental regulations and launching a “Global Green Deal” to benefit developing countries; withdrawing from NAFTA and the WTO and challenging IMF/World Bank policies; repealing the “Patriot Act”; upholding Roe v. Wade; working for universal health insurance; and abolishing the racially and economically biased death penalty.

Because we feel that he comes closest to representing our priorities, we have decided to support Dennis Kucinich for President and hope you will join us by signing this statement. Of course this does not preclude our voting for whoever gets the nomination; this is about whom to support in the primaries. Molly Ivins has put it: Vote your heart in the primaries, vote your head in November. If Dennis wins enough hearts, there won't be any contradiction.

Peace
DR
