Kerry's Iowa State Director Condemns Dean's Remarks

In reaction to our sensible attacks on him yesterday and his ties to special interests like the NRA, Howard Dean responded via a telephone call to the Des Moines Register, "I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks.”

Bullshit.

You don’t need to be an African American from Alabama or South Carolina to know what that flag stands for. It is a symbol of hatred and heartache – loss and pain – and bad memories and still horrifying realities for millions of Americans, white and black.

Howard Dean just doesn’t get it. If he did, he would have stopped using this ignorant, pandering line last year in South Carolina. But he keeps on going like a pandering, anti-straight talking Energizer Bunny.

Thank God, I am lucky enough to work for a man who was not only born knowing right from wrong but has practiced it his whole life. And it was certainly burned into his soul on a boat alone with a few other guys of all different shapes, sizes, and shades of skin.

And I will tell you something else, I am going to sweat harder, work smarter, and do all that I can for the next 79 days leading up to the Iowa Caucus to make sure that Howard Dean never gets the chance to “take our party back” to a place that millions of heroes have taken us from.

I am lucky to work for the candidate of the NAACP – not a candidate who supports confederate flag wavers and the NRA.

Dean said the men with Confederate flag decals in their pickup trucks represented lucrative prospects for the party "because their kids don't have health insurance, either, and their kids need better schools, too.

"I intend to talk about race in this election in the south because the Republicans have been talking about it since 1968 in order to divide us. And I'm going to bring us together, because you know what? White folks in the south who drive pickups trucks with confederate flags decals in the back ought to be voting with us and not them, because their kids don't have health insurance either and their kids need better schools too." (big applause)

Ok? It's not Kerry's fault that Dean said something dumb.
